Experience in Volos, Greece by an
What is the student lifestyle like in Volos?
Volos is a small city so it's relatively quiet, but with many students from all around Greece. It has many different schools, which means a variety of people and a variety of places to entertain them.
How much does it cost to live in Volos?
Greece is not very expensive, so you can rent a home on your own for about 250-300 euros a month. For your expenses I think 300 euros is enough to pay the bills, afford to cook homemade meals and also go out.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Volos? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult per se, but you have to search before the high demand period, which is mainly in September when the new students come to search for houses. This is typical in all student cities in Greece.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food in Greece generally is very good and original. In Volos the cuisine is like the Pelion cuisine (which is the mountain behind Volos), which mainly consists of meat with vegetables. Spetzofai is the best, made out of roasted vegetables and choriatiko sausage (that's the name) and tomato sauce. It can be spicy or not, depending on your taste, and it is always served with fresh bread and of course, feta. Also, fish is very popular in Volos, since it is a city near the sea.
What places would you recommend visiting in Volos?
Pelion is the number one destination, it has many small villages you can choose from, and also Sporades, three islands very close to Volos: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.
Is it good to eat out in Volos? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes! In Volos you have the infamous tsipouradika, which are small traditional restaurants that serve tsipouro (the local strong distilled spirit, like vodka, rum gin, raki) which they accompany with delicious mezedes, small appetizers in a variety.
Is the nightlife good in Volos? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is very basic, because it is a small city. There are not many options. You can either go to a bar or the university parties (which are LIT) and in the summer there are more choices because we have seasonal clubs.
What advice would you give future students heading to Volos?
It is a small city so you have to drain all its potential! Have fun!!
