Erasmus Experience in Utrecht, Netherlands by Andrea
Why did you choose to go to Utrecht, Países Bajos?
It's a vibrant, student city. Also, the Business School I am attending is located in Utrecht.
In terms of location, it is very centrally located within the Netherlands, approximately 30min to either Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received a scholarship from my Business School. It helps with living costs, but not everything.
What is the student lifestyle like in Utrecht?
It is really enjoyable. Within my MScBA class I have made a great group of friends, a good mix of internationals and Dutch students. We find a great balance between studies and social activities. The location of Utrecht makes it easy to travel to other cities and countries and we always create highlights to look forward to with all these possibilities.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Utrecht to other students?
I would definitely recommend Utrecht, I would walk around and find myself smiling more often than not. It is very, very bicycle friendly, and any trip on my bike I have stumbled on some interesting place. It has a lot to offer, you must just keep your eyes and ears open. I am not attending the University of Utrecht (UU), but I have heard only good things about it - I have visited the UU library and its beautiful.
What is the food like?
Delicious variety. You can eat something differently everyday. Italian, Indian, Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, Surinamese, Greek, Spanish etc. The Dutch food are really good too, they make the best sandwiches and snacks when you have a beer!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Utrecht?
I live in the City Centre which is the most expensive place for a student, because it is well located and near everything. I pay 615 euro per month, but it is worth every cent.
How much does it cost to live in Utrecht?
The rent is as in previous question.
Insurance is 40 euro per month for a very comprehensive plan by AON.
Food and travelling takes up the rest which is about 350 euro per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The city is used to all the international students and therefore very easy to get around. Dutch is preferred, but everyone is very helpful and I have never felt I will be lost without knowing Dutch. I am not sure about UU, but I am sure they would have language classes. There is a good company called Babel which the students can contact for classes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Utrecht from your city?
I flew from Johannesburg to Schipol Airport in Amsterdam.
Then you take the Intercity Train (30min) to the Utrecht Central Station.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Utrecht?
For a club vibe, depending on the evening (that club isn't open every night) I would suggest Tivoli.
Otherwise, for a couple of beers/wine, Winkel van Sinkel, Belgisch Bier Café Olivier, Stan & co.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Utrecht?
You discover these places as you go along, there are great restaurants to try out. Above mentioned places have good menus, otherwise any restaurant on the Oudegracht and on Drieharingstraat, for great Tapas is down under on the Oudegracht or at El Mundo in Voorstraat.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Domtower is a must see. I climed out all 465 steps to the top of the tower and next on my list is to visit DOMunder (under the ground). Its a spectacular site and experience.
Also, the Spoorweg Museum is something special.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Utrecht in the future?
It is a city full of surprises, be open to new experiences and dare to be involved. Take a Saturday stroll whenever you can and have a Sunday brunch at a different cafe each time. Don't just visit the mainstream cities around Utrecht, but get to know the in and outs of Utrecht, the hidden gems. You will fall in love with this city and call it home sooner than later. It was the best decision I have made and I am proud to call Utrecht my home for at least a year.
