Experience in University of Porto, Portugal by Cristina

Generally, what is University of Porto like?

The University of Porto is like a group. Have 14 faculties and a business school. All faculties are different in style and purpose. You can interact in all 14 faculties, and this the best. For example, you can study Geography on FLUP, and you can do sports, for low price in Faculty of Sports, because you are a student of the group University of Porto. Or you can study economy on FEP, and visit exhibitions of art, in FBAUP for free.

What are the facilities like?

You have a library, green spaces, free internet, accommodation, microwave for your meals, canteens low. Portuguese courses. Good teachers...

What are the tutors like?

You mean tutors not teachers? Well, teachers are good. Tutors... I'm Portuguese and I never had a tutor but all students are friends, and enjoy meeting new people. There are many students in Porto, who are from other regions of Portugal. I think you should choose someone from Porto, that know all the things in town, or a student who is not from Porto and want to discover the city with you.

Are the lessons easy in University of Porto?

For Erasmus we can say that is easy because the university looks for Erasmus like an experience of life, an open mind for young people. The most important is that Erasmus can live and know another culture, people, languages, interact. Not like normal class, more easy, a lot more.

Does the University organize activities; what are they like?

They do regional dancing and singing; Sports, sometimes dinners. But you have ESN that do a lot of things for students, of all universities, not only U. P.

Do you think the teaching is of a high quality?

Yes, it is. But in my opinion, it is the open-mind experience what matters. If you want study here forever, you will have high quality studies, but for Erasmus you don't have time for that, you will learn to interact, participate, be alone. It is the university of life, more like that. And teacher will appreciate if you do good works about history and culture, if you demonstrate that you are trying to know.

Are there any stories you can share?

Ahhh I have a lot of Erasmus in my house from University of Porto, I rent rooms, and I also study at FEP, so if i tell stories I will be here one month. All students love Porto, and for me, it is just amazing. I know now people from all over the world, (Erasmus Mundus also), I definitely love people from Poland "Curwa". We Portuguese do great teams with people from all over the world, and we learn a lot. The Erasmus also make things better in all ways for university and for the town. You will never forget that experience. I, and my friends, are still in touch with Erasmus from many years ago, and we are sure we made friends for life. I don't have words to tell all that go on, with Erasmus, University of Porto, the city, and everything.
