Experience in Turku, Finland by Carolyn
Why did you choose to go to Turku, Finland?
As an informatics student I wanted to attend a university with a high level of English-speaking courses. Although the Finns are quite self-conscious about their English, I found that many citizens throughout the city, not just university students, were quite proficient.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It lasted for four months (the duration of my stay) and I received 550 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Turku?
Turku is extremely student-friendly, very similar to what we in the States call a "university town." There are student pharmacies and restaurants throughout the various campuses around the city, and the nightlife is dotted with different-colored student uniforms partying around the city center.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Turku to other students?
Absolutely!
What is the food like?
Finland offers plenty of seafood and vegetarian options, which I personally loved, but they also had interesting meat options for those who are so inclined (the student restaurants offered reindeer and moose with some regularity!) The food choices are very healthy, although pricey compared to what I am used to. Kauppatori and Kauppahali are two markets I would recommend to any visitor, as well as the herring market at the river Aura in November if you attend in the fall.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Turku?
No; it was arranged through the TYY office.
How much does it cost to live in Turku?
Shopping and food are quite expensive, but health and housing are subsidized for students and therefore cost much less than I am accustomed to back home.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is difficult and strange! (but not impossible) The University of Turku offers a Survival Finnish language course for exchange students that I would recommend to any visiting student.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Turku from your city?
Because I am from across the Atlantic, I had no choice but to fly. Presumably I could have sailed a boat, but it would have been dangerous and expensive and cold, and a famous boat sank making a similar trip once, and I would not like James Cameron to make a movie about my death. So, really, just airplanes.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There are museums throughout the city. I recommend joining the library's culture club; they will email you about special discounted and free events throughout the year.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Turku in the future?
It is a strange and cold little town with strange and shy people, but if you open yourself to it you will discover it has its own special charm. December is magical with snow and lights and wonderful heavy drinks.
