Erasmus Experience in Turku, Finland by Erik
Why did you choose to go to Turku, Finlandia?
I heard lots of good stories about the education system and the possibilities to travel to countries I usually wouldn't go.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
5 months (Erasmus) I got 220 euros every month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Turku?
You get to party a lot and they really try to help students. If you are travelling during an exam they will change the date of the exam for you to make sure they and you are both satisfied at the end of your Erasmus.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Turku to other students?
I would recommend the university. The city too. It's kind of small but the amazing thing is that all Erasmus students live together in a ''Student Village''. The are many opportunities to party and meet new people from all over the world.
What is the food like?
Nothing special.. Potatoes, vegetables and meat.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Turku?
No, I got help from the University accomodation office.
How much does it cost to live in Turku?
If you want to party every day and explore things while you are on a Erasmus scholarship, around €2000, - a month. But this is including trips to Russia, Lapland etc..
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No, it's way too difficult.. Yes there are.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Turku from your city?
I flew with SAS from Amsterdam to Turku but had to switch planes in Copenhagen. However, spending 100€ is, in my opinion, a better way to travel to the city you want to go rather than flying for 50€ to Helsinki, taking a bus to the city center and taking a 2 hours train ride to Turku including carrying around at least 20kg's of luggage; )
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Turku?
The Monkey or club Marilyn. Before going to the club, stop by at Red hot Chilli restuarant where they have local shots for €1.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Turku?
There is one good restaurant at a hotel but it's really expensive. It's better to cook a nice dinner with friends and some predrinking.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Finnish sauna, the beach and the historical part of the city center.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Turku in the future?
Be prepared for 5 months of party and meeting lots of new people. And of course, be aware of the cold/rain during the fall semester.
