Erasmus Experience in Turku, Finland by Adèle
Why did you choose to go to Turku, Finland?
My University had an agreement with HUMAK in Turku.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I had 4 scholarships: one from my region, one from Erasmus, one from France and one for students who have parents not winning lots of money.
Approximately 800 €/ month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Turku?
It is really great! We were a small class, so we get along really well. Besides, everyone there is really friendly! No problem to adapt! Lots of activities are also organize (trip, parties, meals... )!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Turku to other students?
Well I definitely recommend the city, but I wasn't at the University of Turku but at HUMAK (different universities). And I don't recommend the University at all: you won't learn ANYTHING.
What is the food like?
Say good bye to healthy food, seriously! It is hard to eat well there.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Turku?
It was hard, really hard. I didn't had student apartments. Therefore, I am in a room next to the university (20 km from the center). But it's not expensive 250 per months, with a large room+ a bathroom. However I don't have a kitchen...
How much does it cost to live in Turku?
Expensive! If you don't have the students apartments, it is hard to find below 400 €/per month
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Finnish is hard to learn, but everyone speaks English. Besides, good language courses are held at the University!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Turku from your city?
Do you mean from Turku to France?
Omnibus and then plane!
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Turku?
hmm... I won't recommend a night in Turku, more a day! The city is beautiful! Especially, in the center in a bar when bands are playing! Cow is a nice bar, Edison, Kuka, Dynamo...
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Turku?
For cheap meal, go for asian restaurant! They are good! And you have to try Hesburger, the national burger restaurant!; ) Blanko is a good restaurant too, and you can also try the boats/restaurants! It is nice!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Museums are great as for a small city! And the concert hall offers really good classical concert!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Turku in the future?
Be careful with the accommodation that's the hardest to find! Try the most to find a student apartment from TYS!
Always travel in the country by Omnibus, it is the less expensive.
Finland is a wonderful country, and Turku is great, have fun!; )
