Study experience in Tokyo, Japan
Why did you decide to go to Tokyo, Japan?
I have studied Japanese at Ca'Foscari, the University of Venice, and in the third year it is possible to take an exam at a language school in Japan as university credits.
How long does money last? How much money do you receive as help?
For this type of experience at Ca'Foscari no form of economic help is provided.
What is the student environment like in Tokyo?
The environment varies a lot, there are people from all over the world and especially Asia, therefore you have the possibility to come into contact with cultures that are very unique and distant from ours.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Tokyo to other students?
Certainly, but I did not attend a university. I took a three-month course at a language school.
What is the country's food like?
Very good! You can find everything at different prices. In Tokyo it is possible to eat with just 1 euro! Just in case you do not like Japanese cuisine, Tokyo is full of fast food places and ethnic restaurants (even if I would avoid pizza…).
How did you find accommodation?
Through the school who had contacts with families for home stays and boarding schools.
What is the price of rent like? What is the price in general?
I have not been in rented accommodation, but sadly Tokyo is famous for being one of the most expensive cities in the world for rent, and it is true.
How is it going with your language? Did you attend a university course?
The Japanese only speak their own language therefor going there is ideal “to be forced” to use it and learn it. The language courses are very good both mine and those attended to by my friends therefore the general level is not bad.
What is the cheapest way to arrive at Tokyo from your country?
I found very convenient flights using the website volagratis and booking about three months beforehand.
What places would you recommend going to at night-time in Tokyo?
Certainly karaoke, where, by now, you pay very little and Izakaya, Japanese taverns where you eat and drink. In both places paying usually 15 euros you can order alcohol at will (nomihodai).
And to eat in Tokyo? Can you tell us about your favourite places?
I loved eating everywhere.
Joking aside the choice truly is very vast. I feel like I should rather advise against places like international restaurants where you pay a lot and hardly eat well. Even if I do not love fast food, I must admit that the choice was so vast that I was able to even eat well there too, for example at Mos Burger, a Japanese chain.
Some cultural places to see?
Regarding Tokyo, I have directly taken the Lonely Planet of the city and fully explored the city from every angle. Even here I must rather say where it is not worth going, for example the Tokyo Tower, which is nothing special especially if you have already seen the Eiffel Tower.
A visit to Kyoto and Nara are compulsory!
Any advice you would like to give to future students of Tokyo?
If you do not know Japanese very well try to always have an electronic dictionary with you to help you understand!
For the rest Tokyo is very easy to get around thanks to the excellent transport system! I advise you to get a SUIKA card as soon as you arrive, it is a type of Tokyo Oyster card! A rechargeable card that allows you to use the metro, trains and buses without having to buy a ticket every time!
