Experience in Tokyo, Japan by Meriel
What is it like to live in Tokyo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Very busy. Stifling but everyone is on time. Tokyo is convenient and reliable.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tokyo?
Systematic days. It could be good and bad at the same time.
How much does it cost to live in Tokyo?
150 000 yen at least. The rent is not cheap.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tokyo? Is there any advice you can give?
People who live in Tokyo have a different character in every area. Japanese are mostly shy but in some places like Kouenji are friendly. And they are artistic.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
For Japanese, the taste is different but you will maybe find it the same. Even if you get sick of it, there is food from all over the word. But I am sure that food in Tokyo is very high quality.
What places would you recommend visiting in Tokyo?
Aoyama, Harajuku, Ueno, Asakusa.
Is it good to eat out in Tokyo? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I'm brought up by mixed cultures so I know how foods are like in the world. And I think French, Japanese and Italian are so picky with food. It will be nice to eat out. Ebisu, Nishi-eifuku, Kichijoji, Roppongi... are good.
Is the nightlife good in Tokyo? Where is good to go?
Kabukichō, Shibuya and Kouenji.
What advice would you give future students heading to Tokyo?
If you are white some people will be scared of you. And they are shy so they don't talk much. But don't forget most people will like to help you.
