Famichiki Chicken Food Review
While reading my cousin Kim’s Osaka-Tokyo itinerary, I saw that she included “Famichiki” in her must-try food checklist. I researched more about what it was; it is actually FamilyMart’s special chicken fillet.
My friends who frequently visited Japan told me that the Famichiki was the best chicken they’ve ever tried- better than the chicken in our country’s convenience stores.
I was a bit skeptical of it at first. In our country, convenience store chicken was okay, but it wasn’t really the best. We usually go to fast food chains like Jollibee, Mcdonalds or KFC for our chicken fix. But convenience stores? Not really.
I knew I had to try this legendary Famichiki chicken, which could only be found in FamilyMart. Fortunately, there were a lot of FamilyMart convenience stores in the area- there was one right beside my hotel.
After my trip to Akihabara, I decided to eat dinner inside my hotel. I was supposed to eat at a restaurant in Akihabara, but I balked at the prices there. A meal at a themed café would cost about 800 (~8 USD) Yen or higher. Take note: I had just bought a 4000 Yen (~38 USD) Code Geass loot bag.
That’s why, when I got back to the hotel, I bought dinner from FamilyMart. I was supposed to get the shrimp and cheese macaroni, which I tried the other day. But as I was lining up at the payment counter, I saw a display case that had just been refilled with original and spicy Famichiki chicken.
I immediately returned the macaroni inside the display case, and decided to order two original Famichiki chicken fillets. Each order was about 160 Yen (~2 USD).
My first impression of it is that it was quite small, so I was afraid that it wouldn’t satiate my hunger; that’s why I bought another one.
When I bit into the chicken, I was so surprised. The outer part was crunchy and the meat was very tender. Although it was quite oily, as noted by its oils spreading around the paper wrapper, it was very tasty and delicious.
This is how the inside of the chicken looks like.
It’s true what they say; the Famichiki chicken is definitely something worth trying out. It’s relatively cheap and it won’t drain your wallet. I’m thankful I got a second order, because I couldn’t get enough of it.
