Experience in Timisoara, Romania by Andrea

How does life in Timisoara seem to you? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Life in Timisoara can be pleasant, it is a western city with customs and habits very similar to any Italian city with squares, cafes, young people and very low crime rate. I have lived there for 12 years and rent apartments to students who come to this city to study. Some of them even after university decide to live in Romania and often open a business in many different sectors.

How is the university life in Timisoara?

The atmosphere is excellent, the youth is very reminiscent of our young Italians from the 60s and 70s, some of them have never travelled, they knew nothing about life, many of them are far from the world consumerism and they consider university as their chance of life. The environment is pleasant and even in Timisoara you can make good friends, or... also meet the love of life..

How much does it cost to live in Timisoara?

In Timisoara the standard of Italian residents is slightly above what Romanian students consider acceptable. Right now in Timisoara it costs 200 euros per month + expenses 50 euros. If instead you consider a shared room then we are about 140 euros per month without charges. In general, with 500 euros per month an Italian student is into it.. but with sacrifices they can stay in this city by paying rent, expenses etc.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Timisoara? Can you give any advice above this?

My job is to find accommodation for Italian students in Timisoara, so the advice is to come to me, do not waste time contacting owners from Italy who then change prices and conditions when you arrive. My site consulenzaromania

What is the local food like? What are your favorite dishes?

Romanian food is of a sufficient quality and is very simple and concrete. Instead of pasta in Romania, soups of all kinds are prepared. As a second in general they prepare meat of all kinds with vegetables or potatoes as a side dish. In general, however, you can find excellent pizzerias, Italian restaurants, and of course in recent years fastfood has been flourishing in every corner with sandwiches of all kinds for a few euros....

In your opinion, what are the best places to visit in Timisoara?

In Timisoara to visit there is very little or nothing to see, tourists are presented with "monuments" which in reality are anonymous churches or museums such as that of the revolution that began in Timisoara, which however are far from a tourism policy. In general, the places to see are the square and the 2, 3 city parks '. You can also take a stroll in the river that crosses the city by some private boats hire.

And places to eat in Timisoara? What are your favorite places?

My favorite place is an Italian pizzeria: Il caminetto. If you want to go eat Romanian and enjoy a good beer, I recommend a great place in the oldest brewery in this region: fabrica de bere - Timisoara.

What is Timisoara's nightlife like? Where would you recommend to go out?

To go out there are clubs on every corner, in the town centre for example you can look for the famous GELATO DI BRUNO with room to eat and drink in quantity. There are shopping centers such as the Iulis Mall, on the top floor there are billiards, bowling alleys and various entertainment venues. If, on the other hand, an attack of romance takes you, stroll towards the river bega in the evening and admire the excellent landscape that will leave you breathless.

Do you have any advice for future Timisoara students?

I recommend considering this city as an adventure and a way of drawing valuable lessons from people's lives. Try not to make an Italian life abroad. Identify yourself in the thoughts and smells of the place, immerse yourself in the local culture, get to know Romanian locals and their children, learn from others. The local old people in Romania, try to get to know someone who explains to you what it was like to live under the Communism of Ciaucescu, listen to Romanian music and try to learn the local language when possible. And at some point you will understand that a trip can be much more... than a visit to a city other than yours. Have a good trip!
