Wine wars in the streets of Teruel

I'm here to tell you how the small town of Teruel in Aragon likes to party.

Fiestas roughly run between July 6-10. Throughout these days Teruel is invaded by people from all over Aragon, Valencia, Madrid... from Spain in general. Although it coincides with the celebrations of San Fermin in Pamplona, it has nothing to feel threatened by.

For days its streets are filled with dancers dancing the charanga, all styles of music are played in tents at all hours, and alcohol travels the streets and veins like rivers.

The BEST day is Saturday afternoon, when the handkerchief is placed on the little bull in the Plaza de Teruel. Everyone anxiously awaits the moment when a the chosen group of people for that year travel through the streets until they reach the square and climb the column that depicts a small figure of a bull, and place a red scarf around his neck. In the moments leading up to this people begin to sing, shout and toast... and the moment the handkerchief is put on the bull, instigates a wine war between everyone there. The end goal? Get the previously gleaming white clothes and turn them pink/purple with the shower of wine. Something unique to experience!

There are always great concerts at night and although many people rent apartments, the entire city and its parks are populated with campers with bags, tents and mattresses. The atmosphere is fascinating and the three years I have gone I have never had any problems.

I hope this is helpful for you and encourages you to go next year.
