Erasmus Experience in Tarragona, Spain
Why did you decide to go to Tarragona, Spain?
Let's say Tarragona happened because, out of the many destinations I had shown an interest in, I was picked to go there.
How long did the exchange last for? How much money did you receive to help you out?
My study placement lasted 10 months . I'm at the Faculty of Law at Trento University. In terms of money, for the time that I went there in 2006-2007 they gave me 180 euros a month , with which I was able to comfortably pay for a single room in the city. Although, I know the monthly allowance for the exchange had already been increased for the following year
What was the student atmosphere like in Tarragona?
There wasn't much integration between Erasmus students and Catalan students from the area.
The Italians in Erasmus certainly were the number 1 biggest, most consistent group!
I spent the wintry period in Tarragona and I have to say that there wasn't a big student atmosphere , rather often you can be bored and complaining. Although, I believe that over the years things have improved , and also I advise everyone to make the most of the seaside and come in the summer months
Although, that is to say that our group was a small one, of around 40 Erasmus students, but this lack of numbers also allowed us to be a very close knit group.
Would you recommend the city of Tarragona and the university to other students>
The university wasn't bad , and it was also fairly new and quite well maintained .
I'd recommend Tarragona to you only if you were to come in the summer months. I'm sure that the Erasmus life in Tarragona will be better over the years, but I must admit that, as much as the Erasmus experience has been one of the best and most important experiences of my life, I have to say that the actual city of Tarragona has always left me very perplexed, I didn't really like it very much, especially from an architectural point of view and it wasn't kept very clean!
Tarragona has the problem of being a very small city, in which the townspeople are also quite closed, but I realised after two trips to Barcelona, the location is quite strategic.
What's the local food like?
Spanish, good come on!
How did you find housing?
I took the announcement from the faculty's message boards, or online , I called and called and called and with a map in hand I went and viewed all the rooms.
How much was the rent>
At the time the cost of the room was really good and reasonable and in general the cost of living was a little bit less than in Italy.
What was the language like? Did you do any courses at the university?
I went to a course from the university, but my advice is to live with a Spanish speaker , that's the best way to learn a language!
Although Spanish is easy certainly for an Italian, you can understand quite a lot and by improvising a little you can make yourself be understood without knowing the language!
Whats the cheapest way to arrive in Tarragona from your city?
Aeroplane!
Where would you recommend going on for the evening in Tarragona?
Remember Sala Zero ! there are very pretty bars and pubs in the old town.
And for somewhere to eat in Tarragona? Can you tell us your favourite place?
I can't remember, I'm sorry... but I do recommend the good old bread and tomato that they have everywhere!
What would you recommend we visit?
Go to Tarragona in summer and from there travel, travel, travel!
