What is it like to be an Erasmus student in SZTE?

It's been 6 months since I came back from Szeged and I spent 5 months there so that means Szeged became an important part of my life. Did I have a real good time? Have I built some good relationships? Did I have fun? Was it unforgettable? Yes, yes, yes and a hundred times yes!

Could you tell us about Szeged?

Szeged, city of sunshine. Yes that's right. It stayed sunny for the whole winter but it was too freaking cold. For a mediterranean person it's like living in the North pole. I remember seeing -20ºC in the thermometer, well to be honest I was drunk enough to not feel that temperature; ). When you go out from a club in the middle of the night, you'll feel like "oh it's so hot wanna take my shirt off".

Enough with the party and alcohol chat. So, how are the prices? One word, cheap. If you're coming from some Euro country, you'll be like a money King in Hungary.

What about accommodation?

About accommodation, it turns out to be kind of expensive when you compare it with the living costs, because if they know you are an Erasmus student they will try to make more money of you. I was living in Vitez Utca in front of the Nyugi pub, close to the library, it was very good located and rent was €600. Gas, electricity, and common costs add €100-150, but it depends on how much you spend. However, I had three flatmates, so keep that in mind when making calculations.

What about foods and places?

Oh wait! Did you just say Nyugi Pub? What is that? I think it's the best pub in Szeged. Hungary is really famous for its ruined pub culture and Nyugi is a really good example. They have the best pizza in the world, not kidding! I have been in Italy before but their pizzas weren't as good as Nyugi's pizzas. Also prices are very reasonable.

So after having a pre-drink in Nyugi and being drunk enough for a party, then 'Retro Klub' or 'Jate Klub' are waiting for you. Someone's gonna have fun tonight!

Let's get to the food! There are really good restaurants around the city, but I have some specific recommendations. First 'Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant' to have some delicious Indian food. If you want a good burger then 'Inferno Burger' is waiting for you. Did you just said cakes and coffee? Well then 'Süti nem Süti', one of the best places I've ever been, and trust me I've been everywhere. If you are feeling fancy then you should see the 'Oldies' or 'John Bull Pub'.

What about some trivia?

You will be able to enjoy free transportation since it is paid by the university, which is a really good contribution. So you can go to the darts and billiard saloon called Las Vegas, it is a bit far away from city but you'll enjoy it. Go karting or ice skating, that'll make you build better relations with your friends. Visit the El Dorado shop in the main street, man that store scares me every time I walk in, but they are full of weird and fun stuff.

What did Erasmus experience give me?

Well after all, good things come to an end. After having the best 5 months of my life, I had to leave Szeged and the friends I made there. It hits you really hard when you have to leave, but all this farewells helped me to grow more mature.

If we take a look at the bright side, I've made friends from all over Europe and learned from different cultures. Now I have homes in almost every country in Europe. Don't hesitate to go to Szeged, you'll not regret that.
