Extremadura: An Unknown Beauty
Extremadura is an Autonomous Community rich in heritage, with many corners that I'm sure you don't know and that if you were to explore would leave you very impressed - like how they left me when I explored them.
None of these corners that I'm going to leave you with will disappoint you, as a matter of fact I am sure you will love them.
Go on trips through Extremadura in the car, so you will find many different hidden places and small towns.
Don't forget the Jerte Valley - it is beautiful and even more so in summer when the cherry flower starts to blossom.
Visit Extremadura and enjoy its corners that are unknown by so many people.
1. Discover what Cácares hides
It won't take long to realise that Cáceres is a wonderful city; you will contemplate the beauty of its monuments and streets, strolling through the monumental city.
I have to say, the most interesting thing about Cáceres is inside the Almohad wall, that is, the Old City of Cáceres.
We will be able to enjoy the Main Square of Cáceres, a meeting point for the inhabitants of Cáceres and you will also be able to enjoy restaurants and terraces in it... The Bujaco Tower stands out in the square.
You will also be able to find monuments in Cáceres such as these: The Arc of the Star, the Santa Maria Cathedral, you will be able to photograph the Pulpits Tower, climb the stairs of the Balbos Forum, explore the Golfines de Abajo Palace, the Convent of St. Paul, the Veletas Palace... And many corners of Cáceres that will leave you open-mouthed.
Finally, attend the WOMAD, the World Music and Dance Festival, where you will find parades, craft markets, food stalls... All in the open air in the Old City.
2. See a show in the Roman Theatre of Mérida
Impressive!
When you visit Mérida, don't forget the Roman Theatre, the most representative and popular monument in the city.
I would recommend you to visit it in summer, making your visit coincide with the Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida, during which you will enjoy every show.
3. Take a bath on the Costa Dulce at Orellana Beach
This is an inland beach with a Blue Flag, located on the shores of Embalse de Orellana. .
You will enjoy a relaxing bath in its clean waters, and, in addition to this, the beach itself has areas for sailing, water skiing and more water sports.
You can sit in a hammock under an umbrella while you drink something cool from the fridge; or enjoy the beach bars there.
In the interior of Extremadura, you can also enjoy a great day at the beach.
4. The Jerte Valley in Spring
Make your visit to Jerte coincide with the cherries blossoming which turns Extremadura white, it's so impressive!
To enjoy this wonderful flowering process, do a route through the municipalities that are part of the valley, from Valdestillas, Piornal, Barrado, Cabrero, Casas del Castañar and El Torno to Rebollar.
You will enjoy it.
5. The Main Beach of Trujillo is impressive
Trujillo is enchanting and its corners, more so. The most visited area of this municipality in the province of Cáceres is its impressive Main Square.
In the Main Square of Trujillo you will be able to enjoy the historical charm of the great architectural complex, as well as the church of St. Martín, and the famous equestrian statue of Pizarro.
Also, if you visit Trujillo, don't forget to go up the castle. .
Trujillo, wonderful!
6. Explore the Guadalupe Monastery
The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe has a mix of both Mudejar and Gothic architectural styles. This monument has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On the outside it is impressive, but on the inside it is even more so. I recommend you to visit the mudejar cloister.
Don't leave the Monastery without visiting its museums: embroidery, miniature books, painting and sculpture.
Visit Guadalupe on its important dates, the 8th of September the Day of Extremadura, the Virgin is Patron Saint of the region; and the 12th of September, for being the Virgin as well as the Queen of the Spanish.
7. The National Park of Monfragüe
It stands out for being one of the most interesting bird sanctuaries in Spain where you can enjoy impressive and beautiful landscapes and you can see many birds of prey, such as griffon vultures, black and imperial eagles, and many more birds of prey...
8. Visit the International Livestock Festival of Zafra
This is the most important livestock fair in Spain, where you can find large shows of livestock and crafts and exhibitions of agricultural machinery and automobiles.
In addition to this, the day ends with enjoying numerous parallel activities such as concerts, contests or many more events.
It coincides with the festivity of St. Miguel, celebrated between the end of September and the beginning of October.
Don't miss it!
9. The Pasture of Extremadura Iberian Ham Route.
Enjoy a good Iberian ham in the Pasture of Extremadura with a route through different municipalities in the sierra de Badajoz, from Frenegal de la Sierra, Higuera la Real, Jerez de los Caballeros, Llerena to Monesterio.
Do not hesitate to go on this route and enjoy a good ham with a glass of wine.
10. The Throat of Hell.
Places full of life and colour in Extremadura, specifically in El Jerte. Two areas are highlighted in this place: Los Pilones (with giant pots) and Chorrero de la Virgen (with an impressive waterfall that can be seen from the viewpoint of Chorrero).
I recommend it especially for hiking, with the simplest route being the Pilones, which can be done with children.
It can be visited throughout the year but nevertheless, I would recommend you to visit it during winter, which is when the water course is greater and the flora is more beautiful.
I have left many lovely corners of Extremadura behind, but I strongly recommend them as well as those mentioned above. Extremadura hides a beauty that you must explore, and many corners that you must discover.
Cheers.
