I moved to Spain in January 2016. Naturally, I had some ideas of what the country and its culture are like. Some of my notions were silly (mass media is to blame) and some new ones have come as a complete surprise. Here are a few choice examples:

  1. Only the tourists drink sangria (the wine, sugar and fruit concoction that the rest of the world thinks is the preferred drink in Spain). I legit have not seen anyone around Ciudad Real order sangria. It's always either beer or tinto de verano.

  3. The preferred merienda is pan con chocolate. This is literally a snack that consists of bread and chocolate. As a die-hard fan of the 7Days Double Chocolate Croissants I simply cannot come to terms with this habit.

  5. People cut up their food with scissors. They own several different pairs for different foods. Even meat, pizza and vegetables. Now this is something I definitely did not expect to see.

  7. Contrary to popular belief, Spain is not simply the country of sunshine and parties. It does rain (though I admit I barely remember the last time this phenomenon happened) and people do have jobs. Their life is not just fiesta and siesta though after spending 8 months here I can see why the country is seen as such. Just take a look at my 10 Things I Love about Spain blog post.

There are only some of the things I have found peculiar about Spain. Let me know if you have anything to add to my list.

xoxo,

Stefani.
