Experience in Shanghai, China by Gloria
How do you find living in Shanghai? Do you recommend it? How is it?
I recommend you go to Shanghai during the months of April, May and June. I love the springtime. In Summer, it is very hot and in Winter, it isn't very cold but most of the houses don't have heating.
How is student life in Shanghai?
Very good. You'll meet very studious students in the famous universities. The University of International Studies in which I study is specialised in teaching all of the languages. It's a famous university in Shanghai; well communicated with a pretty campus in the Songjiang district.
How much does it cost to live in Shanghai?
Yuck, the transport costs a lot compared to that in Beijing. However, it's relatively cheaper than Europe. It costs 15 yuanes if you take the metro for over 10 stations. The food also costs more than in the other cities, but less than in Europe. There are many shopping centres and markets, that sell good and cheap clothes. You can find them in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum metro station.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Shanghai? Can you give any advice?
It's super expensive if you want to buy a house in Shanghai but there are youth hostels. You can use booking.com to reserve accomodation. It won't cost you much.
How is the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?
Very good. There are all sorts of dishes. The 小笼包 (small steamed buns), 蒸饺 (steamed dumplings), 豆腐脑 (bean curd jelly), 煎饺 (fried dumplings), 稀饭 (soft rice/gruel/porridge), 锅贴 (fried dumplings), 捣锅底 (fried glutinous cakes), 春卷 (spring rolls) and 南瓜饼 (sticky rice pumpkin cakes) are the most typical in Shanghai.
Which places do you recommend to visit in Shanghai?
Well there is 朱家角 (Canal Town),(River Huangpu), 外滩 (the Bund), 豫园 (Yu Yuan Garden), 金贸大厦 (Jinmao Tower) and 城隍庙 (Town God’s Temple).

Any advice that you want to give to future students of Shanghai?
Mm, the majority of Chinese students and the employees of the big companies in Shanghai speak English and if you're lost, it won't be a problem but don't ask the elderly people. Enjoy Shanghai.
