The "Isla de la Cartuja" had the rich clay deposits, which potters from Triana area used for their pots and tiles. A shrine was soon raised at the spot and devotion for the image grew together with the belief in its miraculous powers. When some monasteries were sold in the middle of the 19th century, Charles Pickman, the English businessman, bought to Cartuja and transformed it to world famous plant on production of pottery.

Interesting feeling doesn’t leave you while walking around the CAAC because some parts look like abandoned, for example, the area around Claustron. The arrangement of large monasteries occurs because of separate monks' chambers. The remains of an original building only are kept in east sector. An important reconstruction was executed during the French invasion and factory time (the 19th and 20th centuries) when the monastery actually disappeared. It was restored for use as showrooms during Cartuja restoration for the cultural purposes of Expo Sevilla '92.

As for current exhibitons there are two really interesting ones: "Abstractions and motions" by Spanish artists and "Color fields" by Jose Soto. The exhibition project itself is divided into two shows, which are superimposed one on top of the other. Firstly, the CAAC collection has to do with pictorial abstraction. Secondly, a temporary exhibition focused on abstraction in movement. The two share the same space, alternating and interrelating with each other, and in other occasions by setting up oppositions. These are two exhibitions, brought together in a single, conceptual and spatial design.
