Julen´s Experience in San Sebastián, Spain

What do you think about San Sebastián as a city to live in? Would you recommend it? What´s it like?

It´s a beautiful city and really peaceful to live in. It´s small and really homely. It´s a great city to live in if you´re looking for a small city, but if you´re after a lot of partying, it´s not your best option.

What´s the student life like in San Sebastián?

The student life is really good. Every Thursday is pintoxpote in Gros, where a lot of us students get together and then we continue the party in a few different bars.

How much does living in San Sebastián cost?

It´s quite expensive to live here, the price of renting or buying a flat is really high. Apart from that, if you know the right places it isn´t so expensive. Although public transport is quite expensive.

Did you struggle to find accommodation in San Sebastián? Do you have any advice for finding somewhere?

In the neighbourhood of Amara, there´s a lot of student flats, so it´s not that hard to find one.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is great all over Spain. In the north seafood, beef, vegetables are typical... in the centre it´s more common to find things like cocido (a type of stew) and on the coast you can find paella. Generally, you can get great food everywhere.

What places would you recommend to visit in San Sebastián?

Everything! San Sebastián is tiny but really pretty, so I recommend seeing everything. The best thing to do is go to the Tourist Information Office and they will tell you all about the gorgeous places that the city has to offer.

And what about eating in San Sebastián? Can you tell us some of your favourite places?

I think that you´ll find something you like in the majority of restaurants.

  • La Piazzeta: Italian food.
  • Bideluze: Burgers, sandwiches, other main courses.
  • Casa Camara y Txulotxo: (you can find this place in San Juan, which is a little town just next to San Sebastián) seafood and really good fish.

What places do you recommend to go out partying in San Sebastián?

The Old Town has all sorts of bars, and it´s where everyone goes. There´s hundreds of bars, so the best thing to do is to try a few until you find one you like. After, I recommend going to a club: Bataplan, Victoria Eugenia or Friends.

Do you have any advice you would like to give to future students in San Sebastián?

Take enough clothes for the wet weather, it rains a lot there!
