Experience in San Sebastian, Spain by Kim
What is it like to live in San Sebastian? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It is nice to live in San Sebastian. The atmosphere is very friendly and inviting. I would definitely recommend the city. There is a lot of culture in the city, it is really beautiful. Nice building, amazing beaches and walking routes.
What is the student lifestyle like in San Sebastian?
The student lifestyle in San Sebastian is partying all day and night. It depends on your own discipline if you can handle it. There are parties every night.
How much does it cost to live in San Sebastian?
To live in San Sebastian costs around the same amount as in Amsterdam. For an apartment you pay between 350 and 450 each month, grocery shopping is more expensive then in the Netherlands, but that depends on how much you are willing to spend, restaurants are relatively cheap and going out is relatively cheap as well.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in San Sebastian? Is there any advice you can give?
We had the opportunity to work together with Flat renting which was offered by the University. They provide accommodations for exchange students. The apartments are well furnished and clean. I had the luck to live in a large apartment with 2 other students.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food in San Sebastian is all about Pintxos. You cannot have been there without trying. It is a really nice concept, but after eating it too much you are completely done with it. We had an amazing Italian restaurant at the corner of our street. (I know, I was in Spain). Spanish supermarkets are expensive, so it is better to go to the Lidl or Spar.
What places would you recommend visiting in San Sebastian?
When you are in San Sebastian you definitely have to go to Bilbao. It is close by and a nice city. Same for the other cities near the coast.
Is it good to eat out in San Sebastian? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is very nice to eat out in San Sebastian, yet almost every restaurant is Pintxo. You have some seafood restaurants, but they are quite expensive. Chinese, Italian, and Japanese restaurants are good and affordable. The little San Sebastian Pintxo restaurants are nice to go but not as much as you maybe would like to.
Is the nightlife good in San Sebastian? Where is good to go?
The nightlife in San Sebastian is good, but not amazing. Some nice bars, but only one big club. The biggest club in San Sebastian is Bataplan. Here are many different parties like glow in the dark night and paint. The rest of the bars is all relatively small but nice and fun.
What advice would you give future students heading to San Sebastian?
Enjoy it! Go surfing as much as you can, it is amazing!
