Salamanca! A real good experience!
Hi there!
I spent three years studying in Salamanca and now I am doing my Erasmus placement...
It is a city that you will fall in love with, as well as the people (who don't have any problems helping you, since they are from the city and they are happy to help) and with its buildings (since you probably know it has been the European capital of culture).
If you don't like partying, then don't go to Salamanca, because, even if you don't want to go out, you pretty much have to...
The days that people go out the most are Tuesdays, Thursdays (student nights) and then Fridays and Saturdays, the locals tend to go out, but there is a lot of them. If you do want to go out on Sunday there are bound to be people in Kandavia!
Typically in Salamanca, you go to an open bar first (Tebeo, Vagalume, Fresas, Avalon... ) that costs 4/5 euros to enter, and then there is a free bar where you can get calimocho (wine and coke) beer and sometimes sangria. Normally you stay there until 22. 30 and then head for the bars such as People, Bisu, Kandavia, Cubic... and if you want to stay out really late, head for Pekados or Ambigu...
Going out and eating out is really cheap there, an aperitive and a beer is only 1, 50 € so you can have a feast without spending more than 20 euros! = D, it's great!
If you have never been out in the University of Salamanca, I would recommend that you do, it is what caught my attention most when I went there. Students there are dressed up and go out partying all day and then all night.
As for the climate, you better bring warm clothes in winter because it is quite cold, but once it gets to March/April, it is normally sunny so people gather in the squares or by the river with ice-creams... and the parties start... Salamanca is full of people.
If you want to talk to other Erasmus students, it is really easy because there are exclusive bars for it, Irish bars, Erasmus bars... people go there to meet and talk to people from other countries and it is really good!
If you want to go shopping, Calle Toro is the best. There are also shopping centres like "El Tormes" where you will find everything.
For places to live, if you are going to study there for a few years, firstly I recommend you stay in a student residence (I stayed in Oviedo the first two years which was great). You get to meet lots of people and it is a nice break after living with your parents all your life. Although I have to say that the flats in Salamanca are much cheaper, you can find an apartment for 3 people for 180 € per person per month. Normally it will be in perfect condition and if you hurry up you can even find a duplex!
It is a real university town, don't forget that!
If you need anything, just ask me!
