Erasmus Experience in Riga, Latvia by Serafim
Why did you choose to go to Riga, Latvia?
It is way from the normal European thinking. The reason of Soviet Union has left Latvia in 1991 was a big advantage to be "near" to their culture and try to understand how is to live in a country with a way of life totally different of the European standard.
It is a capital, it's next to Russia. So, for a little amount of money you can visit several countries, unlike if you travel from Portugal (my case), you will spend huge amounts of money to visit, and of course it's awesome because you'll be in the Erasmus spirit.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I have received around 1300 euros for one semester.
What is the student lifestyle like in Riga?
The truth is that you'll interact more with more with the Erasmus students over the local students and it is easier to socialite with Latvians, unlike the Russians, but I think is completely normal because their way to live and thinking.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Riga to other students?
Yes of course. Living in Riga, even for a semester it's an experience that you'll never forget in your life. University of Riga is awesome, but I haven't studied there.
What is the food like?
Tasty but with a lot of fat :)
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Riga?
Not really, I was in the hostel for Erasmus students, then I moved for an apartment but wasn't the same thing. However, we spent all the time in Hostel.
How much does it cost to live in Riga?
Depends on your way to live, of course. Could be from 300 to sky it's the limit.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Normally they offer you a Latvian and Russian basic course, in order to try to speak with the locals.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Riga from your city?
Ryanair with scales but cheap. I got the for 120 euros.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Riga?
Ye, of course. Old town in Riga! The best!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Riga?

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Riga in the future?
