Quito experience, Ecuador by Maria
What was it like living in Quito? Would you recommend it? How is it?
It is a very beautiful city, it has a mix of colonial and modernism. It is close to volcanoes and it has beautiful parks.
What is the student life like in Quito?
I left a long time ago.
How much does it cost to live in Quito?
It depends where you want to live, for example the south is the cheapest but it isn't very safe, the centre is not bad, but my recommendation would be to live in the north of Quito, because it is safer and more comfortable.
For example, in 'La Floresta', it is a beautiful neighbourhood and you can find a three bedroom apartment for 250 dollars a month, so if you were to share it between three people it would cost you 75 dollars a month.
Also, places like the 'canal 4', 'el bosque', 'la Union Nacional', 'la Machala', are all good neighbourhoods.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Quito? Can you offer any advice?
You can find accommodation in:
How is the food in Ecuador? What are your favourite dishes?
There are many typical dishes, by region, coast, mountain range and orient.
For example, for the mountains you can have Humitas with coffee (masa harina and corn, slowly steamed or boiled in a pot of water), or you can eat a plate of hornado (roast pig, cooked whole), or fritada (fried pork) or papas con cuero (a pork skin broth cooked with potatoes and spices).
You can try this typical food in Guayabamba, which is an hour from Quito. Also, you can taste these dishes in the typical restaurants in the centre of Quito like in 'la Ronda', where there are various restaurants.
Which places would you recommend visiting in Quito?
In the centre of Quito you will find all the churches and you can see the colonial history.
'El Panecillo' hill.
From there, a modern Quito might be the United Nations and República del Salvador.
You can also get to know Guápulo (a beautiful district of Quito).

Which places would you recommend to party at in Quito?
It is best to go to private parties or parties you need to pay for.
You can walk through 'La Ronda' in the centre of Quito or go to the concerts that the municipal of Quito advertise.
You can see the cultural timetable here .
Can you offer any advice to future students of Quito?
Firstly, only use taxis that you have contacted via telephone during the night, as it is safer.
Secondly, if you are walking around with a bag, be especially careful in the centre and the south of Quito, do not be seen wearing branded clothes, walk carefully.
Ask the Police officers for help if you are lost.
The people are initially a little unfriendly, but if you ask them for help they will try to help you.
