Experience in Quebec City, Canada by Maria Elena
How do you find living in Quebec City? Do you recommend it? How is it?
Quebec is a beautiful, French speaking city. It's the former capital of Canada and demonstrates a mixture of Europe and America. Super quiet, super safe and not as expensive as Toronto or Vancouver.
How is student life in Quebec City?
It's really pleasant but very quiet compared to student life in Mexico, Argentina or Europe. It really is quiet. There are many places to enjoy yourself but all are under the country's proper regulations which means no big parties until 6 in the morning or anything. Many places to enjoy yourself outdoors and to do sports as well as visits to see how great this place is... I refer to the area... It's enormous.
How much does it cost to live in Quebec City?
You can rent a room for 400 Canadian dollars (sharing an apartment close to the Laval University, which is the most important one) and eat for 100 dollars a week, if you cook. The bus costs 3. 50 for students.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Quebec City? Can you give any advice?
No, if you're enrolled to the University then you can contact many students who rent apartments and well, speaking French is what's the most recommended, in order to be able to communicate easily.
How is the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?
You'll see the Quebecois have a traditional cuisine composed up of dishes with French ingredients as well as other American ones - the tourtièr (a very delicious meat pasty), the poutine (chips or potatoes with cheese and a sauce) crepe and the pâté chinois (with sweetcorn, potatoes and meat that they made for the Chinese workers who built the Canadian railway. However there is also a legacy of delicious conserves and delicious things prepared in an artisan way, like vegetables and really tasty marmalades. There is no lack of bread, cheese and wine and nor of salmon and meat. The young people like beer and fast food a lot, like all over the world.
Which places do you recommend visiting in Quebec City?
There are different places to visit in every season but the Old Quebec is always a magnificent option, the Montmorency waterfalls, the Jacques-Cartier national park, the ski resorts in Winter and the dog sleds, Tadoussac is close by, where there are whales and a magnificent fiord, there is an Indian village very close to the city, called Village Wendake or the Huron's Indian reservation; and two and a half hours away, is the city of Montreal, which is worth seeing. It's very pretty in Winter but it's very, very, very cold... very.
And to eat in Quebec City? Can you name your favourite places?
The restaurants are very varied and very pleasant; good food and a pleasant atmosphere - Cosmos, Cochon Dinde, Savini and les 3 Brasseurs. You can have a main course and a beer or two for 30 dollars, more or less. The tip and taxes aren't included so you have to take them into account.
Which places do you recommend to go out to party in Quebec City?
Dagobert (disco bar), Maurica (disco bar), the Grande Allée road is both fantastic at night and during the day. Cécile et Ramone; and there are a series of bars called La Boîte à chansons. They sing and you can have a good beer. The Saint-Jean road is also very pleasant.
Any advise that you want to give to future students in Quebec City?
Bring warm clothes even in Summer, to think that they're coming to a big place to walk and do a lot of exercise, to take fantastic photos where security and respect is very important and to learn a lot about a strong and friendly town.
