What is it like to live in Quebec City? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Québec is a very old town founded in 1608 in the East part of Canada; consequently, the old town is amazing, the architecture is pretty nice. People in Québec are very nice, they speak French and most of them are very friendly.

I would recommend to visit Québec, but not for one full week. If you go there, stay 2 days or at least 3 months! There's not much to do in this town for tourists, so spending 2 or 3 days is enough. If you want to stay longer, stay for a least 3 months and make friends with people from here, eat poutine, go in Jacques Cartier National Park, rent a car and visit the east coast, go ice fishing. In brief, there's a lot to do!

Also, Québec is a very good place to party. There's cheap bars, good microbrewery beers, nice places and most people are nice.

How much does it cost to live in Quebec City?

For an apartment downtown, it is easy to find something for 400$ per month (if you have two roommates for example). The city bus is 58$/month for students or 3, 50$ one way. A pint of beer at Bar Le Sacrilège is 4, 50$ (and it is good beer). A regular poutine at Ashton is around 9$. In brief, it is cheaper than most canadian cities.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Quebec City? Is there any advice you can give?

No. Not at all. There is a lot of available apartments all year long. Just go on kijiji.ca and search for appartment to rent. Maybe the website is in French, you can probably translate it.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Pretty normal actually. We eat steaks, pâté chinois, poutine, spaghetti, hot dogs, chicken, fondue, etc. Our local dishes are poutine and pâté chinois.

What places would you recommend visiting in Quebec City?

  • Plaines d'Abraham,
  • Jacques Cartier National Park,
  • Bar Le Sacrilège,
  • Musée des Beaux Arts,
  • Petit Champlain,
  • Saint-Jean Street.

Is the nightlife good in Quebec City? Where is good to go?

Yeah, pretty good. If you like easy-going bars where you can talk with people, go to Bar Le Sacrilège, Irish Pub Le Nelligan, Fou Bar, La Ninkasi (upstairs). If you want to dance, go to La Cuisine or La Ninkasi (downstairs). If you want to drink a good scotch or a good whiskey, go to Irish Pub Nelligan (and try the irish car-bomb).

What advice would you give future students heading to Quebec City?

Have fun! Be prepared for the cold winter because it can easily reach -30 celcius during winter.
