Erasmus Experience in Poznan, Poland by sol
Would you recommend the city and the University of Poznan to other students?
Yes, of course! This is an amazing city to be in. It is bigger than other cities in which I have lived, but it doesn't feel like it. There are many parks and green spaces, something that you will really appreciate when living in a city. People are very nice and kind, and you will always feel welcomed even if you can't speak polish. Warsaw is only 3 hours away by train and Berlin more or less the same.
What is the food like?
The food is glorious. I'm vegan and everything is being so easy for me in here... There are many vegan restaurants which can be quite cheap or maybe a little bit more expensive but the food is gourmet. There are other restaurants that even if they are not vegan or vegetarian, they offer some options for us.
There are many healthy food shops and also some markets where you can buy fresh products and food from the region for little money.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Poznan?
Not really. What I did is just find a cheap place where I could just arrive and then I found a better one which is closer to my university. I recommend you to search for a flat close to your university because even if the tram is cheap and all, in winter you will not want to be far from the places where you need to go almost every day.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Polish is a difficult language to learn if you are only going to stay here for a few months, but you can make yourself understood knowing a few words in Polish and English. Don't be afraid of saying anything stupid in polish, people are always happy to see that you're trying and most of the times they'll understand what you meant.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Poznan?
- Zemsta:cheap and tasty vegan food with some traditional meals from Poland.
- Zielona Micha: cozy and very welcoming, with a menu that changes every day and some yummy desserts.
- Sorrir:coffee and vegan cakes, shakes and smoothies.
- Porazka: gourmet vegan and vegetarian food, they change their menu every day and the owner is such a good cook and lovely person.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Poznan in the future?
Try to go to see some traditional polish music and dancing. It is one of the best things I have seen and is not well known even for polish people. There are some events here and there that you can find on Facebook. This is really a polish experience that you can't miss.
