Hi there,

I am a student at Politechnika Poznanska (Poznan University of Technology) studying MSc In Mechanical Engineering (Gas Technology and Renewable Energy).

Here is a break down of my cost of living.

Between 1500 PLN to 1800 PLN per month

Accommodation - 750 PLN (Including Administration and Bills)

Accommodation depends on the location of your stay. If you stayed in the city centre, a studio room would cost you up to 1400 PLN.

As for my university (Poznan University of Technology), room prices can range from 324 PLN to 524PLN (Depending on which dormitory you will be in and the number of beds in the room).

As for myself, I stayed outside of the university but also a little further away from the city centre, at Osiedle Jaggielonski (In a two-room apartment), where my rents and average bills are listed below:

  • Rent for my single bedroom: 500 PLN
  • The remaining 250 PLN extra (Average) would include my bills and administration fees.
  • The location was perfect for me as it has a Biedronka (A Supermarket) within 3 minutes walk and Posnania (A Shopping Mall) within 4 minutes walk. As for the university, it will be about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on your walking speed. My room was also not far from Ronda Rataje, a bus station, which is within 6 to 8 minutes walk.

    Food and Drinks - 100 PLN - 350 PLN

Food and drinks really depend on how much I cook and go out with my friends. An average meal would cost between 15 to 30 PLN in my experience.

I could get 15 PLN for pizza in the city centre as one of the cheapest. If you would opt for something lighter like a kebab or something similar, it would be slightly less than 15 PLN

Mc Doner (A kebab shop) in Szkolna has some pretty nice food. A Mc Doner box can range from 11 PLN to 18 PLN.

There is also a Mc Donalds not far from the Mc Doner shop.

Overall drinks here a cheap in Poland, I can say beer would safely cost you between 8 to 12 PLN depending on the type of beer and the bar you go to.

I would suggest Pika Pika, The Dragon, and Punto if you would like a nice place to sit down and chit chat with your friends while having some drinks.

Groceries - Maximum 110 PLN a week (Approximately 440 PLN)

As for groceries, Biedronka has always been my choice as it is generally cheaper than other places such as Lidl and Carrefour.

It is hard to say for sure what kind of stuff is cheaper in which store as they have different offers every week, but on average I could save almost 50 PLN to 80 PLN per month when shopping in Biedronka, compared to others, as I would spend less than my 110 per week.

    Entertainment - 50 PLN - 150 PLN

For this, it depends on how much you travel or do things to keep yourself entertained.

Movie tickets, in general, would cost an average of 22.50 PLN. Multikino and Helios are the two cinemas that are in Poznan. Each of them would have cheaper tickets on certain days, so this is something you could check out if you are a moviegoer.

Take note as well, if you go to some clubs, you are required to pay cover charges, which could be also entertainment expenses.

If you would want to visit the museums in Poznan, there are entrance fees for them (which are not too expensive) as you will be utilising student discounts. If you were to visit a particular museum, you could plan to go on Tuesdays, as some museums are free of charge on Tuesdays.

Phone - 20 PLN per month

    Other Expenses - 20 - 100 PLN

This would be something for my emergency expenses and for my transportation (If I do travel a lot). I would hardly exceed 20 PLN in most months as transportation here is generally cheap for students and I do not have any other emergency expenses that would arise. This would include if you lost your student card and require to renew, etc....

Ticket Prices (for students) as of (01/09/2019)

    10 minutes - 1.50 PLN

    45 minutes - 2.50 PLN

    90 minutes - 3.50 PLN

At the time of the writing, 1 EUR is approximately 4.38 PLN.
