My experience in Porto, Portugal by Feriel

How did you find living in Porto? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Porto is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited. It's like a really well organised collection of little places with a rich history and plenty of culture and tradition. I would strongly recommend the city and have a lot of faith in it's power of attraction and seduction. It's a place everyone should sea least once in their life and to live there is something really special.

What is student life like in Porto?

It depends; the professors are really nice, kind, welcoming and very good at what they do. The students are a bit reserved to begin with but they soon warm up to you.

What is the cost of living like in Porto?

For an Erasmus student it's an absolute dream because you can buy high-quality products at a low cost.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Porto? Any advice?

No, not difficult; you just have to do you research on the internet, not hesitate to get in touch with the owner of the property and as a last resort you could always try student halls of residence.

What about the food? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is beautiful. Personally, I really loved eating here because the food is well seasoned and spicy. My favourite dishes are the famous francesinha and of course grilled chicken and any fish dish.

Where do you recommend visiting in Porto?

There are lots of statues and monuments, both old and new so I would start by visiting the old part of porto as well as the many gardens including Serralves and the Palacio de Cristal. I'd also suggest the Casa da Musica, Pont Luiz I... there are so many places it's hard to remember them all!

And for food? Where are your favourite places?

I would highly recommend le Royal Burguer and le Santiago. And the restaurants along the Douro river.

Where do you recommend going out in Porto?

There are lots of clubs including Armazem de Cha, Plano B and that's without mentioning the nights organised by the ESN.

What advice would you give to future Erasmus students in Porto?

Don't hesitate for a minute; Porto is a place that you won't regret moving to. It's your chance to get to know new people, a new way of living, new traditions and most importantly, a new way of learning and a new language (if you don't already know Portuguese). I assure you that it will be an unforgettable experience.
