What is it like to live in Porto? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Porto is probably one of the best cities I've ever been, and I'm not saying this only because I'm from here. It's a really nice city. It's not overcrowded, usually people are nice and open to help you even if they can't speak English!

The old and the new, the landscapes and the architecture are so interesting mixed together. I mean, there's this traditional market where you can buy fresh fruit, plants etc and a few metres ahead you can see a shopping centre which is surrounded by traditional buildings. There's always something going on, such as dance performances, concerts, street performances... Oh and there are some nice cafés and pastries, some more alternative, others rather traditional, but your mouth will be happy to experience both of them.

What is the student lifestyle like in Porto?

The student lifestyle... There are lots of parties for students.

How much does it cost to live in Porto?

Compared to other big cities, Porto is not that expensive. For example, if you share a flat with a friend it may cost you only 150€ (per person, of course). Usually a coffee is 0, 60€ and at the supermarket you can opt for a cheaper brand.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Porto? Is there any advice you can give?

There are flats available near the schools, hostels... But maybe the best way to find accommodation is joining a Facebook group or speak to people who live in Porto (or near), preferably students, because I'm sure they have some friends or they will find someone who's leaving the house or someone who doesn't mind to have another person to share the house with.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Pastry is awesome here. But you need to be careful with the traditional dishes, Portuguese food is not known for being light. If you're in Porto you have to try Francesinha. Caldo Verde is good too, bacalhau, feijoada, cozido à portuguesa... There are many other options, but not so typical. For vegetarians, there are fewer options, but usually it's ok if you ask to replace meat/fish by veggies.

What places would you recommend visiting in Porto?

Everywhere. Parque da cidade, Baixa do Porto, Ribeira, Museu de Serralves, Foz, Porto Wine cellars and vineyards, Livraria Lello, the bridges, Fontainhas. It's a good city to be explored, even the smallest alleys. And you can go to other cities too, it's worth it.

Is it good to eat out in Porto? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Sometimes the best place to eat is in a chop house or in a cafe. But I'd recommend you to go to Spirito, Moustache, Majestic... .

Is the nightlife good in Porto? Where is good to go?

It is, usually people gather up at Galerias de Paris, Maus Hábitos...

What advice would you give future students heading to Porto?

Eat, drink, and enjoy it to the fullest.

Great tips Barbara. Thanks, first of all. I don't know anyone from there so if you help me with it, I'll really appreciate it.
