Experience in Porto, Portugal by Ana
What is it like to live in Porto? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I'd definitely recommend living in Porto. There's always stuff to do around the city. In fact, you can even find several activities all over the city in the most beautiful places. It's also a very beautiful place to live with vibrant views and people. Also you can travel around it very easily through the tubes for a cheap price.
What is the student lifestyle like in Porto?
It's amazing. Porto is a student city so you'll find yourself surrounded by a young community. There's several student parties/activities every week, you just have to choose one!
How much does it cost to live in Porto?
I don't find it expensive. Normally you'll live well for a cheap price. Travelling is cheap and the accommodation is reasonable if you make a wise decision. Food is also quite cheap if you don't eat out everyday.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Porto? Is there any advice you can give?
My best advice would be to ask in coffee shops and look at street lamps where people hang their ads. The best accommodation is not listed on the internet or in agencies. Most of it is done individually so the cost are reduced and there are no fees. If you don't want to go through the stress of arriving your Erasmus city without having a home, you can try finding accommodation on the internet and through agencies, but it will be a bit pricier (not too much).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food in Porto/ Portugal is the best I've ever had. You have to try Francesinha, just ask people where the best one is and you won't be disappointed. Also if you want to experience a bit of Portugal and not just Porto, find a traditional restaurant and ask for cozido à portuguesa or bacalhau. Also in Porto you can find a lot of restaurants with homemade hamburgers. You won't be disappointed.
What places would you recommend visiting in Porto?
You'll have to visit Ribeira (especially during the sunset) Foz is also a very nice place. You'll have to visit Palacio de Cristal, Jardim das Virtudes, Palacio da Bolsa, Livraria Lello (one of the many Portuguese inspirations for Harry Potter), Serralves Museum, Clérigos, Don Luis bridge, Majestic Café, and Sao Bento station.
Is it good to eat out in Porto? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is, my faves are Real Hamburgeria, DeGema, Presto Pizza, Tentações, and ODE Porto Wine House.
Is the nightlife good in Porto? Where is good to go?
It is, you can't miss Galerias or Piolho.
What advice would you give future students heading to Porto?
Take a deep breath.
