Erasmus Experience in Porto, Portugal by Sandra
Why did you choose to go to Porto, Portugal?
Because I had heard it was a beautiful city, and the best of Portugal. Also that it was a city full of young people from many parts of the world who come to study here, so I wanted to make friends from different parts of the world, and I got it.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship was for 6 months.
What is the student lifestyle like in Porto?
If you set your schedules well at the beginning of the semester, you can take classes only three times a week, from Monday to Wednesday, so you can go out at night from Thursday without worrying about going to school the next day. The Erasmus team organizes many events that you can not miss. It is also useful because if you want to travel in Portugal or other nearby countries, cheap flights depart on Thursday.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Porto to other students?
I definitely recommend it.
What is the food like?
Typical food is very good. I personally liked the francesinha, the cod prepared in all its forms and the chestnuts.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Porto?
Yes, I had many problems.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is easy to handle if you speak Spanish, Italian, French, or some romance language. The Portuguese people, in general, understand Spanish very well and speak English to perfection. Anyway, there are Portuguese courses offered by the university but begin a few months after starting the semester.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Porto from your city?
Airplane, but it is better to buy a cheap flight from your country to any country in Europe and later buy a flight with Ryanair or some other European local company because it is cheaper than flying directly from your country to Porto.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Porto?
Piolho.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Porto?
The Conga to eat bifanas.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Palácio de Cristal, the Ribeira, Torre dos Clérigos.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Porto in the future?
Have fun and enjoy everything the city offers to you!
