Erasmus Experience in Porto, Portugal by Livia
Why did you choose to go to Porto, Portugal?
Actually, I think it was a lucky shot. Porto kinda chose me.
My university's exchange application deadline was almost over, so I had to choose my destination quicky. Some friends of mine had already been in the city, plus since they speak the same language as my country there, it just felt right to choose Porto.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I stayed for 6 months total, but my home University didnt offer any help. I just didnt have to pay the University of Porto's fee.
What is the student lifestyle like in Porto?
Its legendary - there's no other word to describe it. The city just has the perfect mix of culture, landscape and night life. I just loved my day-to-day there, even the subway rides, walks to the classes - living the city is such a blast.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Porto to other students?
Of course! I even have plans to visit with some friends and show them how great everything is.
What is the food like?
Lots of seafood, lots of olive oil, lots of cream... and some pretty good wines.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Porto?
I met my flatmates in erasmusu. We searched for apartments online and one of the girls, who was spanish and lived near Porto, went there and looked for some places. In the end, we closed an amazing deal - an apartment at the residential area with the coolest landlords.
How much does it cost to live in Porto?
I think you can live a cozy and good life with 500 euros a month, including rent, food, transportation and fun.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I'm not sure, cause im brazilian and already speak portuguese.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Porto from your city?
Plane. There's no other fast way to cross the Atlantic ;)
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Porto?
That's a though one. There are so many cool places! On the weekends you surely have to drop by the Galerias de Paris. Ribeira is mandatory on monday - every erasmus gather there and party with the most amazing view. I really enjoyed thirsty tuesdays at More, cause its mostly attended by erasmus.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Porto?
Cooking at home is a great option in Porto. Pingo Doce is such a good market, and the best dinner date is gathering your friends from all over the world and cooking something different.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Ribeira is the best view, but i also love Casa da Musica. You should watch a game at the Estádio do Dragão, a great experience. Also Serralves is a beautiful museum to go. And last, but not least, you can't miss the sunset at the beach - brings such a peace feeling to your heart.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Porto in the future?
Enjoy this amazing city and experience everything to the fullest.
