Erasmus Experience in Porto, Portugal by Clara
Why did you choose to go to Porto, Portugal?
I could only choose between Italy (Urbino or Pavia) and Portugal (Lisbon or Porto). I had heard a lot about Porto: other students talk about this city as the best city in Portugal for Erasmus students.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I will be in Porto for 9 months. I will receive money from Spain, but I haven't received anything yet, so I don't know how much I will receive. Anyway, it's a cheap city.
What is the student lifestyle like in Porto?
The University of Porto organizes a lot of activities for its' students: it's tradition to wear black clothes that reminds of the one you see in the Harry Potter films. These students make a lot of activities, but it's a pity they don't let erasmus students join them when they wear their uniform (because of their tradition). But still, it's not a problem, cause the University of Porto organizes free activities for mobility students, and I bet your classmates (both Portuguese and foreign) will be very kind and help you with everything you may need. Portuguese people are very opened and welcoming.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Porto to other students?
Yes, I really would. Your friends will be your family, and the Portuguese students are really helpful. Also, compared to my home university in Spain, I really notice how the university of Porto spends a lot of time and money on increasing its quality.
What is the food like?
It's really good food. You will drink a lot of wine, beer, you will eat chorizo asado, bacalhau, francesinhas... Please don't leave Porto without trying francesinhas.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Porto?
No, I found accommodation via uniplaces.com. I live in a cheap and very well located place.
How much does it cost to live in Porto?
You will find accommodations where you will pay between 160-230 Euros/month. Food will cost maybe 230-270 euros (depends on yourself... you will probably manage to pay less without starving).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, it's easy, and even easier if your mother language is Spanish, Italian or French. The University of Porto offers very nice language courses.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Porto in the future?
Don't doubt about choosing Porto as your destination. It's a very decadent yet beautiful city, chosen as one of Europe's best destinations in 2015. You will fall in love with the city and it's people. Trust me ;)
