Erasmus in Perugia, Italy

Why did you choose Perugia, Italy?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a destination. In my case, I had heard good things about the city and they also gave me a 12 month scholarship, which few people had chosen.

How long was your scholarship? How much grant money did you receive?

That depends on each year so you should always check. They gave me €1000 a month (maximum) for 12 months, I received it all before I left. But it varies depending on the university.

How was student life in Perugia?

There was a decent student environment in 2010. The Erasmus students were mostly Spanish, but also there were people of other nationalities too. There were also many Italian students from other regions who had flats there.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Perugia to other students?

My experience was very good and I think the city has a very welcoming atmosphere. It's small, with a lot to offer in terms of culture, and in the centre of Italy. Italian universities have different systems, which is better in some cases and worse in others.

What is the food like in Italy?

Excellent. That is to say of the pizza and pasta, but it isn't just this.

Was it difficult to find accomodation in Perugia?

No, I found a place to live quickly. There are many on offer, but it's up to you to find one that is in the best location. Generally there are many student rooms in the centre of the city.

How much does it cost to live in Perugia?

The cost of living is average. Rent is usually between €200 and €300 although you can find both bargains and authentic luxuries for those who are more wealthy. The supermarkets vary in their prices and if you follow a diet generally similar to the locals the food will be cheaper. Alcohol is a whole other matter, much more expensive than in Spain, but no where near the level of Ibiza.

How was the language? Did you attend any courses at the university?

The university offered intensive Italian courses in September, free for Erasmus students. However, it´s another thing to learn the language well, as it is easy to speak Italian poorly.

What is the cheapest way to get to Perugia from your city?

Perugia has a very small airport, so unless it's an exceptional circumstance don't rely on it. It's best to travel to Rome, and take the train from there (take care as the last train is 10:30pm, in 2010).

Where are the best places to go out in Perugia?

Start with the main square in the centre. It's a good place to meet people and get to know the trendy places.

And eating in Perugia? What are you favourite places?

For me, it was very interesting searching for that which I personally considered the best pizza in all of Perugia. There are many small pizzerias, thus begins the adventure.

And for a cultural visit?

Very interesting, it's a medieval and wonderful city. It is just next to the town of Assissi and the scenic views are fantastic. A city with which you fall in love.
