Carla's Erasmus Experience in Perugia, Italy

Why did you choose to go to Perugia, Italy?

It wasn't really in my mind to go to Italy but Perugia is beautiful, each street is like a charming little town. The only bad thing is that, from November, it starts to get really cold.

How long was your scholarship for? How much money did you receive?

My scholarship was for 5 months, and I received €400 a month. I received 70% of the grant in the middle of November and the other 30% when I returned to Valencia, at the end of my Erasmus year.

How is the student life in Perugia?

The student life is brilliant, there are students from all over the world, but even so, you end up hanging out with all the other Spaniards.

Would you recommend Perugia as a city and University to other students?

I would recommend the city, the University is pretty chaotic, everything is left until tomorrow and sometimes the teachers don't turn up to class, who knows why... but you get used to it in the end.

How is the food?

The food is the best.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Perugia?

At the beginning I stayed in student halls but I don't recommend it at all, I left as soon as I could get a flat. It's pretty simple, when you arrive go to the first estate agent's you find and they'll show you some places until you find one you love. They'll also organise for you to share with other students going to Perugia if you're there alone and don't know anyone, as in my case. I was really lucky and felt at home.

What is the cost of living in Perugia?

It's not very expensive compared to other cities, in my case my rent cost €225 a month and then I paid another €50 a month in bills (for heating, etc. ). Food is really cheap.

How did you get on with the language? Did you attend a course at the University?

The language is really similar to Spanish but it was quite difficult because the University offered a course but then withdrew it in the end...

What's the most cost-effective way to get to Perugia from your hometown?

Fly to Rome and then take a bus to Rome Termini, from there catch a train to Perugia, it takes about two and a half hours.
