Pardubice, the cute side of Czech Republic
When I was deciding which city to go for Erasmus, I could have gone to Pizza, Pamplona or Pardubice. Im sure any of the 3 cities would had been great.
I wanted to go for a city completely different from where i come from (Portugal), an original place, somewhere I would have to face situations I could never imagine. A place that would allow me to travel around, and being a student I wanted to go for a place in which you don't need much money to have fun - So I decided for Pardubice in Czech Republic.
And I don't regret my choice at all: I found what I was looking for.
Czech Republic is extremely cheap, in particular if we talk about the basic goods, parties and trips.
The supper markets are very cheap comparing with other countries such as Portugal for example. I remember that in the spring we use to buy delicious Ice creams for 0. 20 Euros, and walk next to the river enjoying it.
And a funny fact: Beer is cheaper then water!
The city is small and nice. You can see some old architectural buildings and the cute old square, with nice cafes and pubs.
The weather is terrific. In the winter there is a lot of snow, and you get to see everything covered in white. It can get to -20 degrees in the coldest years. You need to have warm boots and a really good jacket to use on top of your normal cloths (t-shirt or top for example), since every time that you will get into some building it will be warm inside, you won't need them anymore... until you get out again:)
In the summer the weather is great (Starting from March onwards) the temperature can go up to 40 degrees in some years.
Czech Republic is full of traditions and cultural events (concerts, dances, festivals... )
Pardubice is a University city with + 70 Erasmus per semester. All these Erasmus and some local students together are a lot of fun and parties are guaranteed!
There are few places where people hang out. The ones below were the ones I liked the most:
- DydyBaba: it is in the ground floor from the your dorm. So no problems to find the way back after a good night.
Here you have the Facebook page.
- HanyBany: The best Erasmus nights in Pardubice!
- Bajer Cafè: An unique and interesting Café, where you need to go and test the best Czech cake "Medovenik" huuummmm
- Medovenik
The transports in the city are very good, modern and cheap. You can use bus or tram. Still you don\'t need the transports that much since the residence is next to the university and the canteen. And to go to the city center you can just walk.
Pardubice is linked with the rest of the country with good train connections. You can check all the train connections at this link.
Juts one tip: Group tickets are cheaper them individual tickets!
The university is well organized, as well as the Erasmus program. The university of Pardubice receives very well all the students. All the classes for Erasmus are in English. There are organized parties, trips and they introduce us to local students that help us (Buddy program).
And to finalize I just want to say that Czech Republic is the country of the Castles, Beer and good memories.
