Multicultural Palermo
After the historical introduction, let's get started with the real tour!
Our first day in Palermo started out with the Norman Duke's Palace which united cubic elements with oriental ornaments.
In a similar fashion, the smaller building La Cuba (a leisure residence) had a blocky shape, but showed Arab ornaments (called muqarnas).
On the upper rim of the building there is an Arab inscription to the duke (William II), also indicating the year it was built in (1180).
Here we see some fragments of Arab inscriptions that are barely legible today but have been deciphered in 1849.
After my presentation here, our group walked down the main street into the historic city centre!
