Wanting to see something else

After living in Oslo for almost two years, I started to get bored with just going downtown. I wanted to discover more of Oslo and its history. While on a tour a year or so ago, I was told about some rock carvings that could be seen in Oslo. Finally after waiting so long, I made my way to go and see them just days before leaving Oslo.

The Ekeberg Rock Carvings were created during the stone age (so around 5, 000 years ago). The carvings portray a number of animals and a human. Apparently that area was a good place to hunt once upon a time ago, so hunters would camp there. The animal carvings represented some of the animals that were typical of that area.

Nice viewpoint over Oslo

I was alone on this venture, so I decided to explore the area a bit more. Unfortunately the weather was really lousy and looked like it would rain the whole day (it didn't). But the ground was soggy from prior rain. I ran across some trails that went into a forested area and it was really muddy. I made my way to this nice look out point over Oslo. I cannot believe I lived in Oslo for so long and never knew of this place! The trails wandered further into this nature reserve, but I decided to turn back at that point and head home because the skies looked like they would start dumping at any minute. I wish I could have spent a longer time there and on a nicer day.

Directions:

Take tram 18 or 19 and get off at the Sjømannsskolen stop. Cross the road and head towards this grassy patch. You should see a sign that explains in English and in Norwegian the history of the rock carvings.

Most of the carvings are of high quality (I was shocked! ) and you cannot miss them!
