What is it like to live in Nijmegen? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Nijmegen is a very nice place to live in. As you probably know, Dutch people are biking all the time; ) Everywhere are cycling tracks present so that you don’t have to fight with busses or cars on the streets. Nijmegen is a city medium size, not super big but offers all things one might need. Pubs are everywhere in the city centre, so that partying is rather easy. If you don’t want do bike, bus connections are also very good.

One negative thing is that housing is quite expensive (9m² + shared bath and kitchen ~ 350 €). If you have the chance to study or work in Nijmegen do it, it is a nice place to live.

What is the student lifestyle like in Nijmegen?

Depends on your person. In the sportcentrum you have almost infinte potential activities ranging from Kung Fu to Table dancing. There is one big Disco called Matrix if you like Techno. Usually one parties in one of the countless pubs in the centre of Nijmegen or go to Doornroosje which is a cultur centre offering art, literature and music events.

How much does it cost to live in Nijmegen?

Depending on your housing 800-1000€/months.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Nijmegen? Is there any advice you can give?

It depends on the situation. It can be easy but also very time consuming. The student housing is called SSHN and operates on a priority base. This means if you have to travel a long distance the higher you are rated to get a room. An other option is Kamernet, for which you have to pay a registration fee but the webpage offers a lot of possibilities.

Dutch people in general can speak English and most also German.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

As a student I prefer pasta with pesto. Fries, pizza and other fast food are very tasty (compared to Germany). Also fish dishes are very good. A Kapsalon is a must for fast food lovers.

What places would you recommend visiting in Nijmegen?

In Nijmegen there are several museums present from which I would recommend the blind museum. It is not a museum in a common sense. You are guided by real blind people in a completely dark surrounding to get an impression how it is t be actually blind.

Is it good to eat out in Nijmegen? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Quite expensive, medium sized meals and personally speaking disappointing taste /quality. Generally speaking... not very great but you can go out and eat very well.

Is the nightlife good in Nijmegen? Where is good to go?

Pubs -- city centre. Nightlife is very good except on Friday till Sunday because most of the Dutch students travel home with the train weekends.

What advice would you give future students heading to Nijmegen?

Happy studying!
