Why did you choose to go to Nijmegen, Netherlands?
It's a great place with lots of culture and history, it's also in an ideal location to travel around the country as well as travelling around Europe. Transport links are great. The city itself is small but very peaceful, there are lots of things to do here though so you get the best of both worlds.
What is the student lifestyle like in Nijmegen?
Student lifestyle is fun! There are lots of bars to hang out in at night, if you stay in student accommodation there are always parties and things going on. The university puts on lots of events too. The university has great facilities for sports, libraries and study spaces too.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Nijmegen to other students?
Yes, I would!
What is the food like?
The food is very similar to other European countries, although there are plenty of opportunities to try Dutch delicacies such as Dutch pancakes which are amazing.
How much does it cost to live in Nijmegen?
Living here is not cheap! But it is manageable.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes. The university offers language courses and many (I mean MANY) of the courses are taught in English too.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Nijmegen from your city?
Bike. You must be able to ride a bike here. It is the easiest and economical way to travel. The whole country is made for cycle-lovers. You will have no problem biking around anywhere, they have wide lanes and excellent cycle routes and plenty of safe parking spaces to store your bike anywhere you go.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Nijmegen?
I'd go to Cafe Van Rijn, Cafe Van Buren or any of the bars really.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Nijmegen?
I recommend trying The Pancake Boat.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Within Nijmegen: The Old Town, The Waal Beach, The Valkhof Park, The Museums, The Boat tours, The Pancake Boat, the Escape Room Boat, Nijmegen City Central.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Nijmegen in the future?
Go with an open mind, don't be too pessimistic about the town. It's a lovely place to live and it will definitely capture your heart.
