Black Tap milkshakes
I love food, especially desserts. Well, and pizza. And one of my good friends recently suggested me to follow the Insider Dessert Facebook page, where they publish the best, the most innovative and the funkiest dessert spots all around the globe. And I instantly fell in love with that page. And every time I plan a trip now, I check that page for potential must - visit spots that will satisfy my sweet tooth.
And just before my recent trip to the New York city, I noticed a video from Insider Dessert on my Facebook page, showing what will become a place that deserves a very special place in my heart, called the Black Tap restaurant. If you have ever seen a video (or pictures) of giant milkshakes, loaded with toppings, this is the place I am talking about! Curious? Read on!
Where is Black tap situated?
Black tap has several locations across New York city. And beware - the menu is different in different locations, so if you want a specific milkshake, meake sure they are serving it in the desired location beforehand. The one that I visited, was situated in 136 West 55th street in Midtown New York. The place is very unsuspecting from the outside. The only thing that indicates something good is situated there, is the line of people that goes out of the door.
The ordinary - looking entrance that will take you to an extraordinary place.
The crowds
This place was originally selling just craft burgers and beer, which is evident as soon as you see the sign above the door - there is absolutely no mention of milkshakes on there.
But ever since Black Tap became so popular, you have to brave long lines. When I went there, I was quite lucky, because I only had to wait for fifteen minutes. If you want to avoid long lines, do not visit Black Tap during lunch and dinner times, because these are the times when most people will visit the place.
Once I was able to enter, the hostess found me a table, and I had to wait for a server to take my order for almost twenty minutes. But despite the long lines (and long waiting for the servers), food is ready fairly quickly. It only took ten minutes for my milkshake to be ready.
The milkshakes
Black Tap has quite a few milkshake flavours that you can choose from. I had a hard time deciding which flavour I want, but at the end, I picked Oreo, because, well, you cannot possibly go wrong with Oreos (Except if they are mint Oreos, because come on, why would anyone like mint chocolate?). Some of the other flavours at Black Tap are Strawberry cotton candy, Brooklyn blackout chocolate, Fruity peebles and Cake batter shake. How can you possibly pick just one? As soon as I stepped out of the door, I decided that I have to go back and try more flavours.
The milkshakes looked enormous on pictures. Two of the ladies that ordered the milkshakes before I did, got their order and I was disappointed when I saw how small the milkshakes actually are. Well, they were still much bigger than your regular milkshake, but definitely not what I expected. And then I just sat there in disbelief when I received my milkshake. Because it turned out that the milkshakes that the ladies ordered, were the kids’ versions.
And this was my milkshake - half of the cup was dipped in icing that I was able to scrape off with a spoon and eat it (I mean, why would I not eat the icing?), there was a ton of whipped cream on top, drizzled with chocolate syrup, and everything was topped with a giant Oreo ice cream sandwich.
But, like I already mentioned, Black Tap does not serve just milkshakes. In fact, this is a restaurant, not a dessert place, but they simply became so popular because of their milkshakes that they are the primary reason people are flocking to this place. When I was there, I saw some people ordering food, and I have to say that milkshakes are not the only food item at Black Tap that are oversized. I have probably never seen bigger portions before. Just the order of fries could easily feed four people.
The decor
Black Tap has a pretty cool wall decoration on the inside. Most decorations are the graffiti - style drawings, and my favourite one was what I called ‘the heart wall’. Pretty cool, right?
You can even contribute your own art to this place. Well, sort of. You are allowed to draw on the bathroom walls and stalls. Most people just write their names, but you will also find some quite impressive sketches and drawings on there.
This was my contribution. Yes, the Potato creek. When my friends visited me in the United states of America and we drove to Chicago, we passed a creek, called Potato creek, and we could not stop laughing about it.
A few words for the end…
You have to try a milkshake at the Black Tap at least once. Well, one milkshake at Black Tap probably has more calories than a regular three course meal, and it will take hours at the gym to burn those calories, this is all I have to say: totally worth it!
