The longest bridge I have ever crossed

Published by flag-ro Naomi Toma — 5 years ago

I met a new friend named Richard during my trip in New York. He is a hobby photographer just like me so we ended up shooting together and doing collabs with a girl named Kris. After we shoot with Kris in the Central Park, he wanted to take me on the other side of George Washington Bridge, meaning New Jersey to see the sunset.

The bridge is separating New York City and New Jersey. We attempted to find a sidewalk on the north side of the bridge but it was blocked. We asked a security guard how to cross the bridge for pedestrians, and he told us to go on the south side, but there was no sidewalk.

Everything was huge and like a highway. We eventually found a tiny sidewalk but that was leading us down the river and not on the bridge. We wanted to catch the sunset on the other side of the bridge in New Jersey so we were in a rush. We took a huge breath and crossed the highway running when there were no cars coming. This enabled us to actually arrive on the correct sidewalk crossing the bridge and avoid getting down by the river.

So for the new travelers, in order to be able to cross the bridge walking, you must take a sidewalk that is starting down the river, slowly going up on the bridge. If you arrive straight in front of the bridge, there's no way to get on the sidewalk, because there are only cars.

It was 7:40PM and the sunset was at 8PM. We were walking really fast but the bridge wasn't ending. It took us 30 minutes to cross it! And after we did, it took us 10-15 more minutes to arrive at that tourist point from where you could see the bridge and all the cars and eventually do long exposure shots.

It was night already. We vlogged a little bit and then headed to have a drink at a McDonalds in New Jersey near the bridge where we asked a lady how to go back. She told us the only way is to do carpooling because buses are every 2 hours at that time. There was a carpooling stop point before the entry to the bridge. Actually it's pretty easy to get picked up because, in order to cross the bridge, the drivers must pay a tax, but if they say they are carpooling some people, it's tax free for them so a lot of cars were picking up pedestrians and drove them across the bridge just to not pay the fee.

It was the first time we were doing carpooling in NYC and it was pretty uncomfortable for Richard but it saved us so much time going back home.

Very Huge and Crowded

If you think you can walk around Manhattan to visit, you're pretty much wrong. I mean you could definitely, but it would take you hours. It took me like 20 minutes to walk from one subway station to another and there are like 50-100 different stations in Manhattan only. There's the upper Manhattand starting 181th street, there's the Midtown between 40th street and 30th street, and there's the lower Manhattan where The World Trade center is. I almost got lost trying to find a Target there.
