Merzouga, Morocco

Merzouga is a small village situated in the South East of Morocco near the border with Algeria, a part of the Errachidia province, about 55km from Erfoud.

This village is very touristic, visited by many Moroccan and foreign tourists especially during the period from May to October because of its sand dunes, the highest in Morocco. Reaching the top of these dunes you can enjoy a beautiful view, especially during sunset or sunrise.

Nature in Merzouga :

Merzouga is a Saharan region on the East of Morocco, with a dry and hot climate where temperatures can reach 45 degrees during the summer. This village is known for it's sand dunes of beautiful colors which attract a great number of tourists each year, who love going up the highest sand dunes of Morocco to watch the amazing sunrise and sunset. You can find scattered oases in the middle of the largest desert in which palm trees grow along the Ziz river. I strongly advise you to visit Merzouga, you will love it.

Accommodation :

Being a touristic village, Merzouga has hotels in the village center and also some close to the area where the big sand dunes are, which I spoke of. The night in a normal hotel is generally 20 euros per person, but if you want luxury hotels, that could reach 50 euros.

You can also sleep in the middle of the sand dunes, in equipped tents already affiliated with aforementioned hotels. A night in these tents is 10 to 15 euros.

Transportation :

You can go to Merzouga by Grand Taxi from Erfoud, the price generally doesn't go over 2 euros. Once you've arrived you can take a ride on the camels to go deep into the desert for 5 euros, or even take Jeep cars for 10 euros. And for the quad lovers, there is a quad rental company which rents them out for 75 euros for two hours. I guarantee that you will love the adventure in the middle of the desert.

Food and drinks :

The food in this little village is mostly traditional. You can taste the dates of the region and drink the milk of the camels in the cafés scattered in this area, but in the hotels' restaurants you can order any moroccan dish you'd like and they will prepare it for you. I recommend the Tajine or the Tangjia (the two dishes are my favorites, they are generally prepared with a meat of your choice, camel meat, beef, sheep, chicken, rabbit... etc). The price for a lunch in these restaurants varies from 3 euros to 7 euros depending on your order.

For the drinks, you have a menu quite varied since it's a touristic area, especially around the hotels. You will find traditional moroccan drinks (tea, camel milk... etc) as well as others (soft drinks, juice, wine, beer... etc).
