Getting your Tax Code!
In Italy one of the first documents to ever be requested is the Codice Fiscale or Tax Code. This document identifies citizens in all their dealing, such as those of a financial, administrative and public nature. To make it useful, you will need to have a Tax Code number to open a bank account, make registrations, obtain a health card, make residence agreements, among other things. In Brazil, it would be equivalent to the CPF.
Find the nearest Agenzia delle Entrate
Your request is free and anyone can do it, even if you do not have the Permesso di Soggiorno. All you have to do is go to a Agenzia delle Entrate closest to your house, taking your passport. You can find the nearest agency Here.
By providing your information, the site will show in detail the location of the establishment (including a map). However, for me it was more convenient to look for an agency that was close to some subway station since the nearest to my house would require other transportation or going by foot. The choice was then the Agenzia delle Entrate located on Via della Moscova, 2, 20121, approximately one road from the Turati station (yellow line).
What do you have to do once you arrive there?
The procedure in the agency is quite simple and does not take long, all you need to do is the following (I'm not sure if it's always exactly like this, but mine was). Usually people join a queue to get a password. However, if you do this as soon as you arrive, you will have to queue twice! Because the first one will only be for guidance on how to proceed, so I'm explaining now so that you can do everything straight away:
- Collect a form that should be close to the box queue. There is an option to take a written form in English, if that is easier for you.
- Fill out the form.
- Go to a copying machine located in the agency to take a copy of your completed form from your passport (the part with the data) and visa (if you need one). The copy, of course, is not for free, for each one you will have to put €0. 1 in the machine for it to work. Also bring change, because the copier does not give change!
Now it's worth getting in the line! The person on the desk will ensure that you already have everything that is needed and give you a password.
After getting your password, you will only need to go to a desk and provide some information to whoever is on the desk. One of these pieces of information will be your address (which should already be written on your form), but the clerk should ask you to confirm it and give some detailed information (mainly for apartments), such as the name on the door and your postbox. After all this, you will be given a piece of paper with your information and Tax Code number, which will serve as a provisional document until your card arrives. Then you only have to wait 15 days to receive the document by post!
You can find more information on the Agenzia delle Entrate website.
How is it composed?
Curiosity: From what I've been able to conclude, your Tax Code number (actually composed by both letters and numbers) is a combination made from information such as your first and last name, place of birth, gender and date of birth. Because of this, it is possible to discover your Code before you even go to the Agenzia! There are some sites that do this, I tested these three and compared the code to my card and it hit perfectly. So, if you want to have fun try this!
Taking care only with the "Comune" field, it is no longer clear if you are referring to your city or country of birth. In my case, for example, it worked to write "Brasile".
I hope I could help you! Have a nice day!
