Experience in México, D.F., Mexico by Silvana
What is it like to live in México, D.F.? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Mexico City is a really mix of experiences, being one of the biggest cities in the world it definitely can offer a great variation of activities and it is a warranty that you'll never get bored.
What is the student lifestyle like in México, D.F.?
Usually we go to school from 5 to 6 hours a day, however we really like to hang out between classes and even though the classes are usually 2 hours long, most of the teachers leave 15 minutes between classes to grab a meal or just to relax. Students in Mexico are really sociable so, integration is not a problem for anybody.
How much does it cost to live in México, D.F.?
Considering meals, rent, transport and leisure time, with no more than 400 euros a month you would live more than good, transport is actually really cheap and the subway can take you everywhere! (considering my experience it is much cheaper than in Europe)
Is it difficult to find accommodation in México, D.F.? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult, as any other country in the world, it depends on the location, a small apartment in the center costs much more than a bigger one in a less-centered place, also it is common to find roommates requests near the universities. Also is really important to not look for a place in the dangerous part of the city. Some research about it is advisable.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food in Mexico is the best in the world! Maybe a little spicy if you're not used to, but definitely worth the effort. You will find a lot of places to have a great home-meal and of course you must try REAL tacos, not what false publicity sells as taco :/ Personally i recommend POZOLE, is the best thing ever! You will find also "taquerias" opened till midnight to have a great dinner after some drinks!
What places would you recommend visiting in México, D.F.?
The whole Reforma Avenue is a touristic attraction, Coyoacan is really cool to hang out with friends and visit Frida Kahlo Museum, of course downtown is really beautiful too, Chapultepec. I recommend Museo Nacional de Antropología e Historia, since it's the most important in Mexico, and of course for partying and clubbing, La Condesa and Polanco are the best!
Is it good to eat out in México, D.F.? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Of course! and it's really common too! One of my favorite places is "La Casa de Toño", is really cheap and food is awesome! also El Dragonejo is really good!
Is the nightlife good in México, D.F.? Where is good to go?
Yes really good. It's good to go to Zona Rosa, La Condesa and Polanco. There are clubs everywhere!
What advice would you give future students heading to México, D.F.?
I would advice them to choose Mexico, cause life is really great and people are very welcoming and sociable. However, I also recommend to be careful and don't trust everybody, cause even if I really love my country, it is true that is a little dangerous too, but if you're prudent, you'll be just fine!
