Experience in México, D.F., Mexico by Lisa

What is it like to live in México, D. F.? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Mexico City has it all, including great weather most year long, you might need a light jacket for winter except for the mountains. You will find all kinds of restaurants for all budgets, and almost any style of food. Life night is incredible and goes on until early hours of the morning, it can be expensive though, it all depends on the venue, if you are clubbing of just bar hoping.

The are cinemas all over the place, concerts, theaters, museums, art gallerys, whatever you fancy Mexico City has it.

It is a huge city and like most cities it has dangerous zones, just make sure by asking if where you are planning to go is safe. There are buses, metro, etc. but it can be difficult getting around if you do not know your bearings, GPS could be most helpful.

Mexico City has so many thing to offer any age group, Mexicans are very friendly people I am sure you will enjoy very much.

Universities do not have dorms so your best bet is to get an apartment (on you own or with room-mates) very important that it is close to your school you do not want to loose time commuting or spending long hours in traffic which can be very hectic.

How much does it cost to live in México, D. F.?

It can be super expensive or super cheap. It all depends on the zone you choose to live in. If you want cable Tv, internet and other amenities the price can go up. Groceries are not to expensive and you can eat very well on a budget

There are plenty of apartments for rent and in many sizes, it is possible to get lucky very quickly, yet I believe very few are furnished.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

I love all food! Mexican food obviously is outstanding from the typical corner taco to super elegant Gourmet Mexican food. There is also the italian food and sushi places all over. It is imposible to go hungry in Mexico City. Variety is there!

What places would you recommend visiting in México, D. F.?

Reforma, take the tour buses and if you can all the routes it will give you a pretty good feel. It takes you to the most important places, but do get down and see the museums, the Chapultepec Castle, strode down La Condesa or Roma which are very hip, full of people wanting to have fun, rent a bike. There is no limit for fun or relaxation, it depends on you!

Is it good to eat out in México, D. F.? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is wonderful, service in a nice restaurant beats most countries I have visited and that is some, I would rate Mexican service as 100% fabulous. Some of my favourite San Angel Inn, Cambalache, Guadiana, Los Canarios. Less expensive you can go to 50 Friends, Sushi-to, Taco Inn, and we also have all the fast food joints. There is a wide variety to choose from, and you can also surf the internet for recommendations.

Is the nightlife good in México, D. F.? Where is good to go?

One of the best in the world. Best nightclubs Apotheke, Hyde, Ragga, Ink, Kane, Rhodesia, Gravity. For bars: Hookah Bar, Gin-Gin, Brooklyn, Kings Pub, Big Yellow, La Cerveceria, Barezzito, Penny Lane and the list can be a mile long.

What advice would you give future students heading to México, D. F.?

Study hard, preferably try to go out in groups at night, be safe and ask around for the nice neighbourhoods, as any other city there are some places you rather not visit. Sunday is a great day to get your tourist act together... everything is open, there is a lot less traffic and you can enjoy more.
