Experience in Mexico City, Mexico by Carmen
What is it like living in Mexico City? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Yes, I recommend living there. There are lots of people. There's traffic, but it's easy to get around via public transport. I don't recommend the taxis waiting on the street, but the private ones are cheaper like Taxi Elite, or Uber, which is the cheapest. Some say it is unsafe, but I've spent 34 years living here and I've never been assaulted or have anything happen to me. If you look like a tourist you should be careful, that's all.
You will fall in love with everything about the city and its craziness, there are lots of things to do and lots of museums to visit. Prices are reasonable for tourists. This isn't that good for Mexicans because all the prices are going up but our salaries aren't, so it's difficult.
There is loads of delicious food that you can find everywhere.
What is the student atmosphere like in Mexico City?
It depends on what University you go to, but generally, it's quite chilled.
How much does it cost to live in Mexico City?
- Accomodation from 3000 to 4000
- Food from 1000 to 2000
- Utilities from 500 to 1000
- Activites from 500 to 2000
This is per month and in Mexican pesos.
Did it cost you to find accommodation in Mexico City? Do you have any advice?
I already live here. But it's not difficult. There are lots of websites in the university where you can look and lots of advertisements everywhere outside the universities.
Do you like the food? What are your favourite dishes?
Enchiladas and Chilaquiles (fried tortilla strips with salsa and cheese).
What places would you recommend visiting in Mexico City?
Fine Arts and all the museums in the centre.
What about eating out in Mexico City? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
In Coyocan I like Los Dazantes, and the Corazon de Maguey, in Entre Vero. In the Condensa, Alipus Condesa.
In the City Centre: the Bota.
Where do you recommend going for a night out in Mexico City?
The bars in the city centre on Calle Regina if you like having a nice chat.
Is there any advice you'd like to give to future students heading to Mexico City?
The people are really nice, but I recommend walking through the areas in the centre, Coyocan, Roma and La Condesa.
