Erasmus experience in Mexico City, Mexico

Why did you choose to go to Mexico City, Mexico?

Because I needed to see how the network was developing there for a project that I have in Cokidoo. Not that it answers all of my questions but it is the best fit.

How long was the placement? How much grant did you receive as help?

I have already finished university.

What is the student life like in Mexico City?

At the university I went to, the atmosphere was really select, united and everyone was supported.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

Like every university, it has its pros and cons, but I would recommend it anyway as it has many attractions that other countries don't have. The best university here is UNAM, which is famous for having such great results and is recognised as a top 100 university in the world.

What is the food like there?

Very exquisite and there is a huge variety of dishes and flavours.

How did you find your accommodation?

When I was a student at university, my house was 2. 30 hours away from the university. So this time, I looked for accommodation closer to my school. There is accommodation for every price range, ultimately, it depends on how much each individual is willing to pay.

Was the accommodation expensive? What were the prices like in general there?

The prices for a room range from 1000 to 3000 pesos, and studios from 4000 to 7000 pesos.

There are all sorts of prices.

What is the language like? Did you go to a language class in the university?

I took a language course in the university there.

What is the cheapest way to get to Mexico city from your hometown?

For those who are coming from the other side of the continent, there is no other way than taking a plane. The cheapest way to get here depends on what time of year you are arriving. If you are coming here on a university exchange, I can give advise you on accommodation, transport, tourist sites etc.

What places would you recommend to go out in Mexico City?

There are lots of different things to do that suit all different tastes such as rodeos, electronic dance music clubs, live bands, etc. I recommend going to Rodeo Santa fe, Maxcimus Quintin, Hard Rock Cafe, Bandasha, Queen, Dubai, there are lots of good places to go in the Condesa, one in particular is called the Antartic. It is a lounge bar which is entirely made of ice, very original! 'El Reyna del Sur' is one of the most exclusive clubs that has an excellent atmosphere, also one of the best rodeos is the 'Toroloco Rodeo'. There is a little bit of everything in this rodeo which is located in the federal district.

And eating in Mexico City, what is your favourite?

The Mexican Taco

In terms of food, you should definitely try the local cuisine which is tacos stuffed with chicken, beef or pork, wrapped in a delicate flour crisp. You should try the spicy sauce too since after all, we are in Mexico.

The Nachos

In addition to the tacos, you also have to try the Mexican nachos, a salty tortilla chip that is combined with a white sauce that gives the Nachos an exquisite flavour, they are a great side dish to any meal!

The Drink

To accompany the excellent food, the best drink that goes with it is a beer. The local beers are very popular and I would definitely recommend them.

Chilaquiles is a Mexican dish of tortilla pieces fried in butter with salt, pork and chili.

My favourite places to go to eat are:

  • Casa México
  • Restaurant Arrollo
  • Los 3 Caballos
  • Los Manantiales
  • Yupis Sport
  • Hooters
  • Carlos O 'Brian's
  • Casa de la Iguana
  • Costa de San Juan
  • Freedom, Lobster
  • Cafe la Selva etc.

What cultural sites are good to visit?

There are lots of really good places to go:

  • The National Museum of Anthropology and History
  • The Museum of Modern Art
  • The Museum of Chapultepec castle
  • Caracol Museum
  • Cera Museum
  • Franz Mayer Museum
  • The Palace of Bellas Artes
  • The Papalote Niño Museum
  • The Metropolitan Cathedral
  • The San Ildefonso College Museum and Cultural centre

All of these are a delight to go and visit!

Any advice to future students coming to Mexico City?

Mexico City is considered one of the most culturally rich cities in the whole world where you can find everything. Great atmosphere, food, excellent universities, diversity, culture, education...
