What is it like to live in Managua? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

If you go to Managua for exchange or internship you will be placed in a small capital city of Central America. The airport is not so far from the city centre, the transport is very cheap neither by bus or taxi. For tourism maybe Managua is not your first option compared to others cities in Nicaragua but a Visit to the Lake of Managua or Tiscapa Lagoon are spots you can not miss on your trip.

What is the student lifestyle like in Managua?

Exchange students are not so common, but if you end up in Managua, no worries. Nicaraguans are very friendly and warm people that always will try to make you feel like home.

How much does it cost to live in Managua?

In Managua, renting an apartment can cost you from 88 euros to 400 euros per month. Buying vegetables and fruits at the traditional markets are great deals, health and cheap! In the supermarkets several products can be found at reasonable prices. In total, with transportation, food and housing you expend maximum 650euros

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Managua? Is there any advice you can give?

Is slightly difficult to find the right accommodation and the easiest way is to check the announcements in the newspaper or in the campus some people post some announcements for students.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There are many options and prices. But the real Nicaraguan food is when you go to a "Fritanga" mainly is grilled meat with fries bananas and salad. My favorite is Chicken Brochette and banana chips with tomato salad.

What places would you recommend visiting in Managua?

Tiscapa Lagoon, Lake of Managua. Near Managua in Leon: Try sandboarding in Cerro Negro Volcano!! and go to Granada to visit Ometepe Island! Both palaces are just a few km from Managua.

Is the nightlife good in Managua? Where is good to go?

Mostly every place located in "La Zona Rosa" is good for a drink or partying.

What advice would you give future students heading to Managua?

Don't hesitate to visit Managua and many other city in Nicaragua. It's full of beautiful landscapes that make you fall in love of this small but amazing country. Countryside, city, beach, mountains and overall the people, Nicaraguans are very kind and they always will offer their best.
