Experience in Lyon, France, by Ruud

What is it like to live in Lyon? Would you recommend it? How is the city?

Beautiful! Way better than I expected. Lyon, the gastronomic capital of Europe, has an enormous amount of culture. It is not an overhyped city like Paris, but a city that is still in its values. Everyone is incredibly nice (not what one thinks about the French) and it is also a suitable student city.

How is the student life in Lyon?

As a student you have a lot of discounts, which is fine because France is an expensive country. Besides that, there is much organization around Erasmus. It is very difficult to find a room. I recommend: go there, use airbnb and find out more there!

How much does it cost to live in Lyon?

If you want to live in the center or in the old town, count on 500 euros per month. Besides that, food is slightly more expensive than in the Netherlands.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lyon? Are there other things you'd like to add?

That's very difficult. As indicated, go there and find out more there. Amazing how easy that was! Transportation is great here! For 45 euros per month you have unlimited access to: bicycles (which can be picked up at 350 locations throughout Lyon), metro (amazing system, really great), buses and trams.

How is the food? What are your favourite dishes?

Being the largest gastronomical city, the food is delicious. However, it is quite different than we are used to in the Netherlands. You would more likely come across 'confuit de canard' (duck confit) than a simple packet of ham. And you also pay for that then. There is an enormous amount of favourite dishes.

What are the places you recommend to visit Lyon?

There are at least 30! You will find out about them step by step. A hidden gem is Perouges, a village 30 minutes away!

How are the restaurants in Lyon? Can you tell us your favorite places?

From every spot you can walk to a splendid restaurant. It differs a lot in terms of price, but the quality is always good! Restaurants (including drinks) are the best in Vieux Lyon.

Is the nightlife in Lyon good? Which place is really a must-visit?

The nightlife is extraordinary. The city is not full of many big clubs where you pay huge amounts of money to get drunk. All places/bars are very cozy. Moreover, it is possible to visit the big clubs, there is much diversity!

What advice would you give future students who go to Lyon?

Make sure you have a room in the center and have your transportation stuff in order ASAP. Do not be afraid to learn some French, the French appreciate this. It is also wise to not hang out too much with nationals, do not live together with Dutch (preferably some French). In that way you will get to know the city, culture and environment and you will get the most out of it. Be open to all new things and grab new opportunities!
