Experience in Lyon, France by Louise
What is it like to live in Lyon? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city is amazing with its two rivers, hills, old town and brand news areas. You can do everything there, and you're close to the Alps and the sea. The city is human-sized so you can walk almost everywhere, and there's a lot of students, so good parties.
What is the student lifestyle like in Lyon?
The universities offer really cheap sports classes (for 20 euros you can do whatever you want). Our parties are from Thursday on, there are also plenty of associations you can join. The libraries are very comfy and they open often, so it makes life easier.
How much does it cost to live in Lyon?
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lyon? Is there any advice you can give?
Find it before you come here!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is amazing. Forget being vegan or vegetarian for just one year. We have the most amazing food here, and we've got everything. You have to go to a typical restaurant (they are named "bouchons"), eat some saucisson sauce gribiche, pieds de porc, or quenelle de brochet. And with some good wine, please, you're in France and just nearby the "Beaujolais".
What places would you recommend visiting in Lyon?
Fourvière, Vieux Lyon, Confluence and its museum, croix Rousse, les traboules, le musée des miniatures, le musée de la résistance... There are also really cute villages less than 40 minutes away by car like Peyrouges, Oingt, Trévoux... They are really worth it.
Is it good to eat out in Lyon? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, definitely. You should go once (at least, it's a bit expensive but it's amazing) to "La brasserie Georges", and celebrate someone's birthday there. There is also "l'ouest", from Bocuse, in the main square (Bellecour). You'll have some good indian or chinese food in la Guillotière, and the best Kebab at the master Tacos.
Is the nightlife good in Lyon? Where is good to go?
Les berges du rhône are the best spot to meet up with friends and drink outside. Everyone chills there with beers and it's very nice. Then go out wherever (le sucre, l'ayers boat, le petit salon or le barrio, depending on what you like) or just spend the night in Croix rousse and terreaux's bars.
What advice would you give future students heading to Lyon?
Have fun and eat du saucisson!
